I am having serious performances with a new installation. I now realize C: is a 'green drive' my old was 'black'. The old drive is in quarenteen till I am sure it is clean of malware. It is at least 400% faster. Thing do not add up. The black did not have all the security patches. I think I stopped after SP3. The new C: has all of them.

There shouldn't be any performance hit, I got sp3 running pretty good. The performance hits will always be security software related. Antispyware software will cause slowdown, all-in-one security suites are also very bloated and slow.

You can use crystaldiskmark software to test your drives, it will let you know if one is faster than the other.

    my setup xp sp3
    1. zone alarm firewall basic
    2. avira free antivirus
    3. firefox browser
    4. sandboxie

I noticed a slight performance drop if the patches are not integrated, or if the wrong patches are installed (many "security" patches are just malware from microsoft, and do nothing for security). Back when i was still using XP, I would use nlite to integrate the service pack, followed by all the security updates that I needed, this seemed to stop the problem.

Also, I assume you are using WD drives...the "Black" drives are much faster in every way than the "green" drives...the "green" drives are meant for storage (other than the fact that they are not reliable enough to trust with storage, or fast enough to make RAID5 usefull). In short, the "green" drive is to WD what a Maxtor is to Seagate.

Also, make sure it isn't windows's fault...many people forget to install chipset drivers and have problems just like this. Such problems can also be caused by forgetting to disable the disk indexing service.

Great advice! Security issues must be the problem. I am still working to clean the old C:. It is even clean when scanned while it is D:. I just do not believe it. I have posted queries on some security sites. I will get to the bottom of this.

Yes, if I installed sandboxie when I intended I would not be going through this.

I will need to look into nlite. I have looked at it before but never have had the time to use it.
