does it say DVD Rewriteable or DVD ROM or DVDRW or anything like that on it? If so what does it say? Also try punching that model number into google and see what you get.
I just did a simple Google search using "Compaq 117" and every reference that came up indicated that this drive is merely a DVD-Rom drive (a reader), and none of the references referred to it is a DVD-R DVD+R or a DVD+-R drive. One of the sites even offered up new firmware for the drive, but that listing still stated that the drive was a DVD-Rom drive.
