13 hours to do a virus scan? I would suggest doing a complete format and re-install of windows, virus or not. Its also possible you have some hardware issues (maybe HDD). They might surface during the procedure.
What are your system specs?, just out of curiousity.

Sounds like big problems with your hard disk to me as well. Best option is to leave that hard disk and buy another cheap small one (40 or 80GB drives are inexpensive these days) and install windows again on that one fresh. Then see about recovering the lost data from your existing drive that you need and reformat the old drive.

not if it's the hard drive's actual physical hardware that's causing the problem.

So you have a dual booting system? Is the problem only with XP?

Since they're on separate drives, however, it could be that the hard disk with XP on it is the one that's at fault.

sounds like that drive is dead, run error checking on it, if no errors come up then the drive is KapUT, if errors do come up on it reformat and reinstall xp......even if a reformat corrects the issue i would still suggest to junk the drive, a hard drive that is having read/write issues isn't safe to store data on anymore!

go my computer>right click on the drive in question> go properties> and to the tools tab

can you post a list of your processes so we can see if any know viruses are listed (beside hidden svchosts!)

    best of luck!

Just because the drive isn't old doesn't mean it won't go wrong.

your process tree looks clean.....im sure:p
    --------------------------------------
    edit:
you do have a low level spyware on your computer though, i dont believe its causing you issues though

    systune.exe
causes pops and reports your browsing history to websites and junk....

Bad sectors on the drive most probably, the problem won't affect everything.

it may have just been that there were some corrupted files in your XP install, possibly your registry. Keep us posted if you have any more issues.
