From the CNet and amazon sites this model is standard def 480i: http://reviews.cnet.com/Toshiba_27DF46_CRT_TV_27/4507-6481_7-31891568.html?tag=sub http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-27DF46-Pure-Standard-Definition/dp/B000ERI3SA
Not HD although it has an HD tuner. All TVs have to have an HD tuner, that doesn't mean the display is. 480i is the shorthand name for a video mode. The i, which is sometimes uppercase, stands for interlaced, the 480 for a vertical frame resolution of 480 lines. The digitally transmitted horizontal resolution is usually 720 or 704 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and therefore a display resolution of 640 × 480; that is standard-definition television (SDTV).
Yes that tv is an SDTV (480i) with a built-in DTV tuner (ATSC) and analog tuner (NTSC). Like MysticE said, all tvs and devices with tuners will incorporate ATSC tuners by July of this year because of a Government mandate. Your TV can't support HD resolutions, but surround sound (5.1, 6.1 up to 10.1 from what I have seen in some store setups) is based on your receiver not your TV. But for the best picture and sound I would recommend a newer, 7.1 surround system with a 1080p compatible TV. If you want, tell us what your price range is as this will help us point you towards a good TV with a good price. If you can spend $1700 on a TV I would go with this; a Samsung 40" 1080p LCD at Amazon.com. 40" isn't huge but its decent sized and its not expensive at the moment, it retails for $2300.
For less money than that you can get a superior picture and product. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TH-...r_1/002-5027869-7730442?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
You can receive SDTV and HDTV signals over the air via an antenna. That set can only display 480i so it doesn't matter what you are watching. It will not be better than 480i (640x480). As far as its inputs it can only except 480i over composite, s-video, and component video. It is not capable of progressive scan. Ced
One thing to remember though, is the picture should be great on all the channels that the tuner can grab. There is no in between, either perfect reception or none.
Thanks for all the help I am getting the TV in about 2-5 days. All i wanted was to be able to watch channels 25.1,5.1 and channels like that.
