When you are burning make sure you do not multi task and close down all unnecessary progs including spyware.
@biscuit77 How long is it taking you? I'm thinking on your specs an approx would be (no multi tasking like gwen pointed out) w/ say no more than 70% compression: 15 mins to rip, 20 min to encode and if burning at 8x 10 mins for a total of 45 mins. Not free but a little faster (approx 15 mins depending on movie & compression) would be anydvd and clonedvd. You can try it free for 21 days.
@biscuit77, I have actually performed a movie back-up from start to finish with CloneDVD 2 & AnyDVD in 19 minutes flat. I'm talking from the time I started to the time the back-up was ready to watch. Not all back-ups are quite this fast, but the longest would be 45 minutes. Average time with this Combo is roughly 25 minutes.
Check and make sure your DVD drive is still in DMA mode and not in PIO mode. This can slow you way down.. Go here for setting DMA: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking DMA.pdf or here: http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/.
