I wanted a previous to "RF" version of DVDXCopy. On Ebay a user was selling his copy of 4.0.3. After purchasing it, I became concerned that I could not use it. Can software such as this be sold if the previous user completely removes it from his computer? If so, can I simply insert the previous user's License ID and Password?

    Thanks

This is sort of a Grey area Legally but I do believe it is Legal as I have seen used software for sale on Ebay before and I have sold used software before..I believe the User License just gets transfered over to you..But there is really no need to Buy DVD Backup Software because one of the best Backup Programs is Freeware (DVD-Shrink) it has probably the best Quality compression engine of all the DVD Backup programs and has all the same features.....Cheers

Just talked to Studio 321 about giving my copy to my friend, and they say the software is licensed to one user only. If I give it to another person, then this is illegal and they will terminate the activation.

321studios as far as I can see is a pain in the butt. With most software you can transfer the license by letting the company know that you have sold it to somebody else (this generally only matters when updates are free) but 321studios does not allow that. I bought DVD X COPY PLATINUM and wish I never had. It took me forever to get it to work and only worked after I got there last update before the judge put a stop to the sale of the program. I couldn't return it because I bought it from a vendor even though I thought there was a 30-day money back guarantee. There customer service was terrible and all they wanted to know was did I actually own the product (which I did). They had very little interest in actually helping me. I even contacted customer support and after 3-emails verifying that I actually owned the product they turned me back over to telephone support which is where I started at and got no help from. I think they forgot that were not the only game in town anymore and there were free options available. I understand that they have laid off 50% of there staff since the judge put a stop to there program.

Fortunately, I'm a ex-321'er. What you'll need to do is go the dvdxcopy.com website. Login with the license id and password. Change the previous owners information to yours. 321 will & cannot tell you this. You can manage your account, online. This is why they ask all of those dumb questions whenever you call, to protect your account. So protect that license id and be sure to change the password, but I didnt have to tell you that, right? The old owner just may decide to borrow it back, ya know.
    Best wishes.
P.S. No, they've laid off or fired at least 80% of their staff. This includes management,R&D and Tech support. So hurry, hurry

In general, it is NOT a grey issue or illegal as long as you abide by the lic agreement of the software. Some companies are anal and issue "non-transferable" licenses -- which mean you cannot sell it to another person if you want to. Others, are just fine with transferring ownership as long as you (seller) destroy any remaining copies you have and have uninstalled the software from your system.

Personally, I would like to see someone maintain a list of unfriendly or very friendly lic software/companies. "Legally" they can write whatever the hell they want in their agreement and if you agree to it, tuff on you. This is one area that I strongly dislike the entire way software is "liscensed" instead of "purchased".

With "things" you purchase, you are at least given the Fair Use right to First Sell.

Any item with a copyright(music, book, movie, software etc) can only be licensed. You can never can own it because it is "intellectual" property.
At least with software it has a license agreement you must agree to before installing. You can trade and sell goods but licenses cannot be traded or sold without the copyright owners permission.
    I hope this helps
