Issues with converting .avi to DVD and burning...

I've downloaded a movie in .avi format. I'm trying to burn it to DVD to play in a stand alone. I've done this in the past with no problems, but this particular case is giving me problems. The .avi was created from a PAL DVD and was encoded into Xvid format. I have tried ConvertXtoDVD, which produced a DVD that would not play on my standalone. I tried intervideo's WinDVD creator, which attempting the subsequent files with Nero, gave me "DVD-Video files reallocation failed" error and asked me if I would like to burn anyway. I did and the first time there was an error after burning, second time the DVD did not play on stand alone or my pc's dvd drive. I looked up this error, it was recommened to use ifoedit to recreated the ifo/bup files, which it did, but the same errors occured in Nero. I read another suggestion to burn with ImgTool Burn, which was supposed to reallocate the files, but this program also resulted with an error and the DVD was useless. I am currently attempting to convert the .avi once again, this time with NeroVision Express 3. Prior to the convert, it alerted me that most parts of the .avi were in PAL (didn't know .avi could have region codes) and if I would like to proceed anyway, so I am currently in that process right now. I don't believe it's going to work, but I'm posting anyway to see if anyone has any ideas what the specific problem is and how I can go about correcting it.

Try it with DivXToDVD 0.5.0.2.99, it's ConvertXtoDVD's predecessor, but imo, a whole lot better, and it's free.

0900 - I have tried both the predecessor and newest convertxtoDVD program and from what I can tell, the predecessor (DivXtoDVD) does not appear to address or solve the audio sync problem which is the biggest problem many of us are having.

I am finding success with some files, (with ConvertXtoDVD) failure with others, still. I suspect it's my system drive's fullness at the moment, as each file I've tried to convert in the last three days has failed to correct the out-of-sync problem - whereas a few days ago it was correcting just fine. I'm going to do some housekeeping and try again.

I don't actually have the original DVD. I have a compressed (.avi Xvid) of the DVD (with I believe was in PAL). I don't know how the file wax exactly compressed, but when I tried to convert to DVD using Nero Express, it gave me a warning about parts of the source file being in PAL. I'll have to work with is the compressed avi (not the original DVD).

I have tried WinDVD Creator as well and the resulting files didn't work either. I tried with ConvertXtoDVD and it worked perfectly, except for the audio having lite cracking noises throughout the film. If I could get rid of the bad audio, it would be perfect.

to jerkism-the problem may very well be coming from the compressed avi file you are trying to convert.if the audio noise is in the avi file, convertxtodvd will convert the same audio noise.convertxtodvd will convert what it see in the avi file.it would help if you could get a new avi file of the movie and try another convertion using convertxtodvd.

The audio in the avi plays perfectly when I play it with my media player. After converting it with convertxtodvd, the resulting audio is not the same. It's not unbearable, you can still get through the movie, but it is noticeable.

    To jerkism,

You didn't answer the question on whether you converted your PAL file onto NTSC when using ConvertXtoDVD. Did you?

Perhaps you should try a better PAL to NTSC converter. In my case I use Procoder 1.5.

Do read another thread I am starting today on problems I have been having with converting avi files onto DVD, and how I solved them.
