    Hi,
I have an iRiver X20 and am trying to sync it with itunes. I've downloaded the most recent agent, and my iriver is loaded as a device and shows in itunes. I can drag songs into the folder in itunes, but when I hit sync on the agent it comes up with an error:

"I encountered an unexpected error while synchronizing your
device. This may be due to a disconnected device.
Please make sure your devices are properly connected and try again."

Any ideas on how to fix this?

itunes does not really care if iRiver devices works correctly with itunes they have enough trouble with Apple hardware. Try using the free version of Media Monkey. See it that doesn't fix the problem.
Have it import your music from where ever. If you have any problems with MM just post them on this thread.

Post what you think anyway. You might experiance culture shock. MM is packed with options making the interface more busy and more confusing than itunes.

    Hi.

Have just downloaded Media Monkey. You're right, it is a culture shock! It's not as simple as iTunes when you first get in there, and the way the library is set up (You have to click library then artist to get songs) is annoying. It's similar in that respect to Windows Media Player, which I don't like to use.
Speed is great compared to iTunes. I'm doing quite a few things at once and there is no freezing or skipping.

Just tried to sync my iriver and aborted halfway through, as I have 10GB of music and a 4GB device. Some music was transferred, and when I disconnected and had a look through, it appears that every song has been tagged individually and is coming up seperately. This is exactly the issue I was trying to avoid by using iTunes. When I turned the player back on, it took awhile to load up and the screen was jumping about. Not sure if this is the player itself or something to do with the aborted transfer. It hasn't happened before though.

Thanks for the suggestion. It does look like a good program with lots of potential, and the fact that it recognized my iriver straight away was a big plus.

I'm going to have to take the iPod shuffle to work tomorrow though, as there is no way I can fix the tagging problem tonight.
If anything here doesn't make sense, or if there is a way of fixing it (that a newbie like me wouldn't know :) ) please let me know.

    Thanks for the help :D

It is doing its part, now you have to do the rest. It is not magic. You will need to tell it what to do. If you tell it to do something stupid don't blame the application for trying to carry out stupid instructions.

You are probably your worst enemy. What you do not know is hurting you. By the way, tag problems have NOTHING to do with the sync. The tag information is in your music files. If the music is not tagged properly you need to fix it yourself. I would either learn to live with that problem until you know enough to fix the tags your self, find someone to fix the tags for you or buy the music. If you buy music it is tagged properly.

    Back the the sync issue...

I assure you aborting mid sync will bugger most players. The Sansa is the only idiot proof player I know of. It takes the time to reindex everything after a disconnect. I find this anoying because I can follow the rules but I know someone who stopped using her ipod because she could not remember to eject it before she disconnected it. The Sansa was built for people like her!

You can easily screw up a sync if your player is smaller than your library. Media Monkey is actually the best sync app for players smaller than the libraries. I suspect that is why people buy 120 g players. They avoid the sync problems of having a player smaller than the library. Who needs 3,000 hrs of music on a player? They are painful to use when you are trying to find something you want.

You need to go to tools/options/mobile devices and set your sync options. MM has many options for syncing. Some are critical when your player is smaller than your library. I also have a 4g nano with a vast library. I keep a standard set of play lists which takes up abot 1.5 g. The rest I swap out when I feel like it which is about monthly.

I suspect your problem is that you keep trying to put music on without taking enough off.

If you want a no fuss sync you can opt to delete then fill your player up with a random set of music. That is done with 2 settings. 1) remove what is not on the sync list, 2) fill the device up with a random set of music.

Later, you can use more advanced features if you like such as switching out play lists. That is what I do. I keep a few favorite play lists, replace a few play lists then manually add a few albums. If you change a play list on your computer MM will update the play list on your player.

Again, MM provides a huge amount of tools but you have to learn to use them. Culture shock again.
