I have been trying to backup my iTunes library by dragging and copying everything into a folder I have on my desktop but it doesn't seem to be very effective. Is there anyway to do it other than the method I have tried?

Are you trying to drag for folder to folder? Because Itunes won't let you drag from application to folder.

Try looking in My documents>My music>Itunes.

That is the default folder for all music.

Depending on how large your library and if your tunes are not DRMed you can also back up to DVD disks from within itunes. A DVD will hold more than 1,000 lossy tunes.

What would cause the dvd not to back up? I used the back up and it acted like it wrote to 2 dvds and when I went to put them back on the dvds were empty. My bad for not checking them before I wiped my computer.

I have found a way to do it. Just go to My Music and copy the whole iTunes folder and load it onto another computer. Then, iTunes will find it, or if it doesn't you can open the library youself from file and everything will be there.
