i've Given up on ALL DVD burning!!

    Nero info-tool is a good idea at this point. I also think we then need some more concrete info to go on, for example a simple attempt at ripping via DVD Shrink, with exact error messages...

    but until then it looks like the symptoms of a bad drive, or old firmware

    you could paste the info from info-tool here. It's a looooong report but it is very detailed and may well have the answers. Of course you may have a duff drive but it's worth checking all the basics..

    One last question

    Is the partition ntfs, for Win XP or 2K os's, or is a fat32? If it is so convert the partition otherwise we loosing our time...

    I got a feeling this is not correct.
    You should have an ASPI layer installed here, although like I said I still think you have a bad drive. But worth a shot right? Check this out, it explains a bit about ASPI:

    The term 'ASPI' is an acronym that stands for: Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. All the following terms are synonymous: ASPI layer, ASPI drivers, ASPI interface. The term 'SCSI' [scuzzy] is an acronym that stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD/DVD-ROM drives and CD/DVD burners/writers [hardware]. Software programs such as CD digital audio extractors [commonly known as 'Rippers'] and CD-writing utilities such as CDRWin use/require ASPI drivers to 'communicate with' SCSI devices. Many people don't realize however, that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CD/DVDs.

    well i'm stumped, i can't see anything apart from what squizzle pointed out. A couple of things to mention, but nothing that points to your problem -

    - crap CD media

    - didn't know this software was still being made, i last saw it 5 or more years ago.

    squizzle pointed out the missing CPU info, i dug mine out, mine is all displayed ok -


    As i say, i'm stumped, i'd be tempted to say the drive is stuffed

    Like the man said install ASPI it is easy to do and if u can take out that drive and test it on another pc to see if it is good or not. Odd to see gear works those drivers also come with dvd x copy? They do make newer drivers that r available online. After testing the drive/aspi and then in another pc i would be mad if it didnt work then i would (u dont have 2) would reformat that thing with the recovery partiton or disk and see what happens. Last night i had to reformat over a compaq recovery partiton (wiped it out) do to a customers mistake (she stuck in a northgate disk and ruined her partiton) and used my oem xp disk with her key and it worked. I Dont know if your notebook has a recovery partiton or a disk but u could always try and reformat it. Weird how nero into tool is not reading your cpu. I would call sony and not void your warranty if u have one, use their disk/aspi/test in differnt machine/or recovery partiton and then if that dont work call them and get a new one! U can also NOT load incd and microsofts high mat updates and u can try disabling imapi and re enabling it. Good luck.

    cheers, though it's only the 2nd time abroad with work in 5years, but i guess i appreciate it more that way, and 2times is better than zero.

    i am stumped by this problem, but it would be nice if the firmware sorts it out

    It would be, but I am not so sure. That Gear software has me stumped I know Xcopy uses it, but it does not always get along with other programs. I tried out the Gear burning program to see if it was the same as Xcopy and it gave my computer a headache, I did a restore and then used a regcleaner to get rid of it and had no further problems. Did find an article on Gear AspiWDM

    Maybe the poster should try running a virus scan just in case.

    Howdy! I hate to say it man,but I recently went through all of this
    same crap with my burner,and unless you want to be able burn DVDs
    your probably going to have to take the new burner plunge.I think
    I may go refurb
