Are japanese and US gamecube models different internally? The guy who modded my gamecube said that it was a japanese cube and he had to put a ripper in it (he said the chip he was supposed to install couldn't be soldered in because it was a japanese model). Now the weird thing is that it says in the back that my cube is a DOL 001 US model, and it plays US games before it was even modded. What's more weird is that everytime I start up my cube, for a split-second, something what looks like the logo and menu of the qoob chip (the orange cube with its name) flashes on the screen, before the ripper bios appears. I emailed him asking why that was happeneing and all he said was that the qoob couldn't be installed because it was a jap model (man what a reply, hedidn't even answer my question). I'm going to his place right now or maybe tomorrow to sort things out

Another thing, the ripper is starting to frustrate me since sometimes the cube wouldn't see it when I boot it up and the original gamecube bios would come up. Geez, I wish I had a gamebit or something to open it up and see what's going on inside

Sounds like a shoddy installation. Whoever modded your GameCube doesn't seem to know what they're doing, since the Qoob mod chips can be installed in any GameCube just fine (works with Panasonic Q as well). Any internal differences should be minimal, nothing radical enough to prevent a Qoob mod chip installation.

Also, if it played US games on it's own then it's a US GameCube. Ever think that maybe this guy is trying to rip you off?

the q-cube if already modified with a solder on chip
    or the switch mod

may be able to play imports already

well it does say DOL 001 US on it, so it must be a US console

The only internal difference between the Jap and US GC is one Bead of Soldar (assuming they are the same board revision).
Its soo simple to switch between US and Jap for retail games its unbelieveable! It simply needs a switch installed where the bead of soldar would usually be.
So if someone is telling you that the JAP and US gamecube are too dissimilar internally, he has either never delt with that board revision, or he is talking out of his...... you know where im going.
