I bought a modded wii from singapore 2 weeks back. It is a jap wii (stickers and manuals in japanese); but the vendor updated it with 3.2U (system menu in english showing 3.2U).

Does this also mean that my region is changed to NTSC-U? Is there anyway to check it?

I have been playing backed up NTSC-U games successfully (e.g. SMG).

I don't know which modchip is installed and I was searching the forum's to see if I should upgrade to 3.3U. I saw the people advising not to upgrade wii with another region's upgrade. So, I needed to find out if I should upgrade to 3.3U or not. 3.3J is not an option as I am in India and do not know Japanese.

    Thanks.

What first few letters is on the Wii serial#?

If it is LU then you have a USA Wii system.

If it is LJF then it is Japanese but they could have used the region changer on it to make it USA.

In both cases you should update using the USA update since you can get into system settings and it shows 3.2U firmware.

It is LJ. I will update with 3.3U and let you know the result.

Thanks larrylje. I upgraded to 3.3U and it works fine. All my backed up NTSC-U discs are working fine as well.

btw, I still do not know which modchip is installed in my wii.

You will need to get a hold of the place you bought the Wii from and ask. Or open the Wii up and take a picture of it and post it here and we can help identify it for you.

    no thanks. :)
I just meant to inform others; who might ask me, what modchip I have; with which I was successfully able to update to 3.3U.
I suck @ opening stuff up and since my wii is not bricked; I would keep my hands off it.
    Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like the man who sold it to you used a program called "AnyRegion Changer" to change the sytem menu to English as well as changing it to NTSC-U. Don't worry now your Wii is basically an American Wii capable of playing NTSCU games....read more about it here.... http://wiibrew.org/wiki/AnyRegion_Changer

Just wondering how your Japanese Wii is working with the 3.3U menu. I too am considering getting another Wii here in China which is Japanese but has been modified to English menu. Didn't know this is possible. Anyway.. I've been worried it won't be a good idea to do this as I wasn't sure if you can just install a different region system menu onto the console..and whether it can be updated. Sounds like all machines are the same just a matter of which one is installed.

Would like to hear more of our experience with upgrade etc...can you get news from the U.S. region then?

    Thanks
