I have two 700mb AVI files that I want to join together, I assume VirtualDub is the correct program to use for this. But when I open the second file, it says the sampling rates are different. What's the best way to go about this while making sure that the audio and video won't be out of synch? Thanks.

Open the first part with virtualdub. Make sure that video->direct stream copy is checked and audio->full processing mode. Then from audio change the compression, for example mp3 @128kbps bitrate (it must be constant, not variable). Then save as avi. Do the same thing with the second avi, with same audio bitrate. After that you can join the files for sure.
