I have the XVID codecs and AC3 audio codecs according to Gspot, picture 1.

    VirtualDub disagrees, picture 2.

AVI Joiner also disagrees, picture 3.

Any ideas? Who do I trust?

Some applications use Directshow codecs some use VFW codecs.
VirtualDub can only see VFW codecs.

FFDSHOW has a separate setup for VFW codecs.
Turning on the XviD codec: 'Start' => 'FFDSHOW' => 'VFW Configuration' will allow VirtualDub to see it.

In VirtualDub, under the menu selection 'Video' => 'Compression', it lists the codecs it can access.Once the codec is turned on for VFW, it should be on this list.

As a side note, I would be joining AVI files with 'AviDemux' instead of VirtualDub - it's more flexible when it comes to appending files.
