Hi My box died over the weekend - i just unplugged it and when i plugged it back in it was dead! So, assuming it was a clone, i built a JTAG cable as described here - http://www.freewebs.com/jtagg/ - and used Skymax UP! with the STARVIEW-29LV160.bin file. It all went without error but the box is still dead. I always thought that this was a clone but from reading this forum i now see its a first generation Starview box. It has 13x7 vents. So my questions are: 1 - can you jtag one of these 1st generation boxes? 2 - if you can, then which .bin file is used, and where can i get it? Thanks in advance for any help, dk
Hi A bit more explanation of "but the box is still dead"? Any lights come on,? can you flash it/jtag it? If its DEAD DEAD ie nothing at all happens at all when you switch it on then I would strongly suspect the power supply, (check the fuse in the mains plug first) check for bulging or leaking capacitors in the power supply or get someone to check it for you. jbvid
Thanks for your reply. When i say the bix is dead, i mean there is no display. When you switch on, you hear a click and thats it. The jtag appears successful as there are no errors reported. There doesnt appear to be any bulging caps but yes it could be the psu. But surely all this is irrelevent if, as i asked, you cant jtag this box??? dk
Hi Yes, still seems like the power supply as they always have more than one voltage output from the power supply, ie 5v,12v etc and it could be just one of those thats down. If you are up to it and carefull with a meter you could check the lower voltages, usually on a white multiplug on the main board (linked from the power supply) they usually have the voltages marked on the board for checking purposes. You can jtag the 1st Gen boxes, so it may still have Jtagged sucessfully if the relevant voltage necessary was available as there are several going to the board as stated. Hi jbvideo, thanks again for your reply. I checked those voltages you wrote about and i am missing the +23v dc line. All the other voltages are present - 7, 12 and 3.3. I thought that cap C11 looked a little odd so i replaced it but no joy. Does anyone have any idea as to what could cause the 23v line to go? dk
Hi I'm afraid i'll have to pass now on any further suggestions as i'm not a professional electrician on power supplies but I have read on the forum about capacitor failures on some of the earlier S/V STB's So I would change them all to start with, then check the diodes with a meter, hopefully sc0user will read this and tell you which specific capacitors are more suspect to fail. As a final check, maybe worth looking on the under side of the power supply for any tell tail burning marks. Could also follow/trace the 23v line backwards. jbvid
Thanks for your help, jbvideo. I checked around and discovered that the 23V line is not used at all, so that was a dead end! I tried download the 260 Jtag Flash Image as linked to here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/531363 This link is dead as are all the other mediafire links. I used 29lv160.bin which i got from here: http://dooby2oon.4shared.com/. I would like to try the 260 version, assuming that it cant hurt, i may have just used the wrong file originally. Does anyone have a link to this - its not in eamos library and a google search turns up nothing. regards dk
HI all jbvideo: that link you gave me has links to all the .bin files for use with GTROM program, but none for use with Skymax Up. The stickie at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/531363 clearly states: Jtag Tut http://www.mediafire.com/?7tzcc4dj3yd SkyMax 2 http://www.mediafire.com/?8fzumnj1k9g Jkeys http://www.mediafire.com/?3z9z322ck2x 260 Jtag Flash Image http://www.mediafire.com/?49jgvte4o0z As i said none of these mediafire links are working. Thanks for your help though. HiTeck: i tried removing C21 as suggested in your link but still no joy. At this stage i really want to try the different jtag .bin file, as i think the box is electronically ok. Anyone got alternative links to the ones provided above? Thanks dk
The unlock bin file you used in your first post is the correct and only unlock bin file for a Starview, clone or genuine.
Thanks scouser, at least now i know its not the wrong jtag bin file thats causing the problem, its a bit confusing when the file was called "260 Jtag Flash Image " on the sticky thread...cant think of anything else to try so i guess the box is foobar! dk
You sure the 23V not used as I checked a box I am fixing at the moment and the 23v line on this one IS live, 22.79 reading on this one.
OK HiTeck, will look again in the morrow, box is in work. I couldnt see any connections/tracks from the 23v line on the pcb board connector so i ASSUMED it mus'nt be used - would be great to have schematics for this stuff...
can anyone help me im trying to jtag my starview box i can't get it to finish writing i keep getting the same error Write Flash ADR[7FE00000] LEN[00200000] : Please Wait... Load Data RAM Fail Write Flash END any help would be great thanks
While on the subject of jtagging someone may be able to help out with a problem I have. I bought a jtag kit last year and used it successfully many times. However, since then I have lost the colour coding on the cable. ie what purple corresponds to etc. It is a gray parallel plug with a 10" flyaway cable.
