I recently ran into a similar problem with dvd playback. I couldn't figure out if the dvd was skipping randomly, or at specific points. Try rewinding through the parts that skip or skipping back to the beginning of the chapter and have it play through the problematic spots again. If you can play through the part that skipped it's probably a problem of dust on the laser lens and or minor errors on the disc. You mentioned your dvd player is new, but it's always a good idea to invest in an optical lens cleaning disc, (it's just a dvd with small brushes and an automated cleaning process). The disc demagnetizes the lens and removes dust and dirt. If you smoke then you’re probably going to want to clean your lens more often. Verbatim is a very good quality brand, and burning at a slower speed could help. Digital innovations makes an optical lens cleaner that I use. As soon as I cleaned my players lens my dvd's played through without a hitch.
