    Hello,
I set up this new computer and I'm having some problems with drivers that I can't seem to update and display issues.

    My specs:
    Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4
    Intel E2160
    MSI RX3870 OC edition
    onboard sound
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500Gb HDD (sata II)
Samsung DVDRW drive (not sure of the exact model)
    CM Real Power Pro 650W
    CM 690 case

Ok so I installed all hardware, fired her up, installed XP downloaded all the latest and greatest updates for everything...

In device manager: Yellow question marks on the following:
"Other Devices > audio device on HD audio bus"
    Yellow Exclamation marks on:
"USB Root Hub" on all 8 of them!

Also, my display is an LG L194WT digital which has a native resolution of 1440 x 900... but my MSI HD3870 won't let me get past 1280!!!!!

Lastly my Hard drive is only being recognized with 127Gb instead of 500Gb. Any way to fix this without having to format and reinstall???

    any advice?

    Thanks!

I would unplug the computer from the internet, next completely remove your antivirus, firewall and antispyware programs that are installed. Now try reinstalling all your drivers.

Even when these programs are disable they can prevent the installation of motherboard drivers.

yes, my windows xp CD is the original without any service packs (but I have updated everything to SP2 etc)... As far as drivers, I installed XP, then installed the drivers from the CD, and then continued with all windows updates.

    jony:
I don't have any antivirus etc. except whatever came with windows because I just finished building this thing right before I posted. I intend to download AVG but have not yet.

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

that is your problem then as need xp sp1 to go past 127gig but your sp1 is an add on not intergrated with the xp cd. do you have a spare hd below 127gig to load xp then install sp1 then clone onto the 500gig hd?

F***! so based on what you said (ddp) I would have to install my windows xp without the service packs on an HDD, and then "clone" it to my 500Gb after I update to XP with service pack 2???

There's no way to do this without having to format and reinstall?
Also, is there any free software that allows me to do this?

I do have a spare HDD (an ancient 10Gb)... so how does the process work? I have both HDD's installed, but install windows on my 10Gb HDD, and then use some clone software to clone it on my 500Gb, or do I only install the 10Gb HDD, and then "add" the new HDD later??

    Thanks man!

btw, I got my display to show up at 1440... apparently the drivers on the CD weren't the latest available... but i'm still stuck on the USB drivers issue as well... any suggestions about that, and the HDD issue I just updated about would be great!

    Thanks again.

ok just to update, I got all my drivers working correctly, and also got my screen resolution to show up at 1440 which is max on my monitor.

I'm still curious about the HDD though... If there's any possibility of fixing it without a full reformat please let me know!

I believe you can reformat a partition on the fly with certain programs, the process runs after you reboot the system, before the OS loads. Just make sure you have the service pack installed before you try it!
I used Acronis DiskDirector to resize a slave drive this way. Never done it for an OS drive though.

hey didn't realize people were still posting on this thread because I started a new one, when this system of mine puked up my 800 dollars... Easily the most difficult and frustrating build I have ever come across... Anyway thanks for all your input, hopefully all of these problems will go away once I buy vista, a new motherboard (RMA), and maybe a new video card (RMA)... ouch!

it's alright, my RMAed 3870 isn't faulty apparently (it is), so I'll have fun getting that sorted... :(

so I was taking my system apart to mail out the motherboard for RMA today and noticed something... ****!! On one of the pin contact areas of the CPU, there's like a dark spot... I highly doubt it's supposed to be that way, and I'm wondering if it shorted out or something... I checked all the motherboard pins, and they look okay, but the one that appears to be in direct contact with this "dark" part of the CPU is also looking a little unusually dark... maybe it's bent, i dunno I can't tell!!!!

I have to assume now that this entire issue was my fault for speeding through it and being over confident because I've built so many systems... maybe I just wiggled the cpu enough to bend a pin, or maybe I didn't check carefully enough before installation and the pin was already bent, or maybe its not bent but that spot shorted and darkened my cpu, or maybe I didn't seat the HSF properly and while moving the case it bent... I DONT KNOW!

anyway, enough ranting... does this mean my cpu is done for as well? Hopefully my mobo will still be eligible for RMA, but I'm assuming I'll have to buy a new cpu as well?

Is it ok to take the chance and try to install the same cpu on a replacement motherboard? The dark spot on the cpu looks almost like a pencil mark over one of the pins...

It looks a little suspect. It's not that easy to bend the pins on socket 775 CPUs these days because they're not exactly pins in the traditional sense. I'd recommend RMAing the CPU and the motherboard. You shouldn't have any problems doing so.
Meanwhile I managed to squeeze a replacement for my graphics card. If they give you hell, just moan and you'll get things done!

lol, glad you were able to get your stuff sorted out! I think I'm going to wait and save the shipping on my video card for now though as it seems most likely to be a mobo/cpu problem. I will keep the moaning into consideration though!

as far as cpu, I didn't know that cpu's were returnable? what do I tell them, that the cpu already had the "dark" spot? haha... I dunno, I bought it from a local store though, so I'll give it a shot!

just tell them it doesn't work, you tested it in another motherboard. They aren't to know, are they? If they say it's fine, get them to send it back, that way you've got someone to test it for you.
