G'Day All, My daughter sent me a mov file generated by her camcorder. WMP7 won't play it reporting "Unspecified error". Gspot shows both audio and video as "Unknown". I uploaded it to Photobucket and it plays fine. I've dumped Quicktime some time ago due to conflict issues. I downloaded another mov file from the internet and it plays okay. Any ideas on how to get my daughter's file to run on this W98 box without conversion?

Hi creaky, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, K-Lite V3.4.5 is the last W98 compatible pack. Are there other Gspot alternatives that might identify what codecs are used in this file?

    Sorry, i overlooked that you'd mentioned Win98.
On this machine i'm on XP, i've just tried a dozen or so .mov files (music videos as it happens) and checked them with GSpot (2.70a, the latest), and all show some info in GSpot. The Audio and Video boxes are blank in GSpot, but don't say unknown.
There's info showing in the File and Container boxes, nothing else though.
I'm no expert on .mov files, i've always found them to be inferior to anything else and only have any as they're mostly old music videos downloaded years ago (i recall back then they were the only file type out there to download). I just tried playing 3 files, they all played OK in Media Player Classic (which is obviously part of K-Lite) but 2 played without sound though they all played fine in VLC media player (with sound), so i would try both of those players. There are obviously other players but that's all i use these days, and i certainly won't go anywhere near the bloat that is WMP. I love Winamp for music but i find it too hit and miss for video personally.

edit- here's an example of what i see, from a .mov file on the left and a .mpeg on the right...

Creaky, I installed Quicktime Alternative which came with Media Player Classic. Now MPC and WMP7 will play the file perfectly. Thanks for your help...

No problem. Quicktime Alternative rings a bell, but as i say, i don't bother with .mov's very often, i'll try to remember that one for the future.
