Hi, first time Linux user. Problem: my XP won't start in any mode, need to recover from har disk (no XP CD existing). To save my files first I'm running Knoppix Live-CD (english version. I find it not showing any files or folders which names include scandinavian alphabets. Is it possible that Knoppix for some reason is not showimg those (neither via command prompt)? Or have I really lost those files and folders? Hard disk seems to work with no problems in searching the files so losing those really seems odd choice for me. Being Finnish explains use of scandies. I'm fully a newbie with Linux (end loser with OSs in general) and don't know how to set any possible parameters for Linux in start up. And would that even help at all?
I don't think knoppix live has that many region variants.. and that's where the problem lies it seems. very long time since I used it because it's a long time since it was updated and better alternatives for backups are out there.. so I could be way off the mark. http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes since I don't think knoppix supports ntfs filesystem you would most likely be better using something which does out of the box like puppy and using the drive mounter. http://www.puppylinux.org/ their forums and wiki have all the info.
Thanks, I already downloaded Puppy but it won't boot from CD. Not yet verified the checksum of the CD, download was successfull.
that's really odd.. but saying that I have never bothered since 3.14 which does everything I need. odd little bit of info.. sometimes linux doesn't like booting from a dvd drive .. observed it myself but I don't have a clue why it should make any difference. I usually burn with an old cd burner at 16x .. makes a world of difference... or just maybe the puppy people have messed up. nicely incoherent topic here http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/alt.linux/2007-11/msg00084.html does that help?.. might be a way to at least move/copy the files to a different destination.
Hi, problem solved: amateur mistake, I did not burn the Puppylinux CD as image but a file... Now it works and I can find all files and folders. This also confirms Knoppix not fully supporting NTFS or some character set issue as it could not show all files.
That's great .. good news eh? suggestion for the future.. always split a drive into 2 parts then you can keep your data safe from the vagaries of xp and it's perpetual messing up and dying.
Yep, that is my intention. I just faced the next more serious problem. The PC is HP Pavilion from 2005, AMD Sempron 3200+. Via recovery I get it up and running. But after updating SP2 or SP3 it goes back to this rebooting loop. I am not convinced the full recovery including formatting of hd is run though it claims so. Here I would like to make the partitioning to have one for files apart from XP. No can do. And the recovery is run from recovery partition of hard disk.
why recover it?.. it's obviously broken somehow in the way the recovery thing works.. those partitions aren't safe from virus activity.. the restore points get set there.. and news.. formatting doesn't destroy data. get it to boot and get your install key and activation then I guess a full wipe and reinstall should do the trick. winkeyfinder 1.72 (google) useful little tool .. and source a OS install disk from somewhere.. I wouldn't use xp on hardware like that.. my amd 3400+ runs debian64.
do not upgrade to sp3. serious drivers incompatibility. BSOD all over the place. do a full hdd wipeout. you still have product key dont you? its on a label underneath if im not mistaken. works on any XP installation cd
Hi, problem solved: 1. Knoppix did not fully support either NTFS or scandinavain alphabets. After burning the Puppy Linux correct (as image, beginner, yes...) I made it to save all I needed. 2. HP Pavilion recovery. Even though it claims to make also formatting I don't believe it made it in 9 minutes... But still XP worked. On the other hand, I did not get the chance to crate own partition to be used only for OS. 3. SP2 or SP3 upgrade made it not woking again. Reboot cycle was back again => new recovery. 4. With a little help from my friend I found the HP patch to be installed in AMD PC's BEFORE SP upgrade. => Up and running nicely.
