I recently got a new computer and had to re-download all my programs. I got EAC and LAME 3.96.1, but when I encode MP3s (with preset-standard settings) and play them (on Winamp 5.1), they just fluctuate back and forth in a range of 5-10 kbps. On my old computer, when I encoded and played them, it would keep bouncing around from 128 to 320, always on 'even' bitrates (160, 192, 224, etc). As far as I know, I'm not doing anything differently now. I tried encoding music from a number of different CDs and it all came out the same. If I wanted it to fluctuate with a range of around 10, I would just have used CBR.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Never encountered that problem or even heard of it.

I don't think this is a problem at all. What they are saying is that they want the range to be a ceirtain way. I will say this, there is no corrolation between the numbers you are seeing and the encoder your using.

There could be many factors to this. Are you setting up the VBR mode correctly? What is your command line argument? Did you have WinAmp 5.1 installed on your old PC or an older version?

If your unsure about the set-up, try using a better frount end. I recommend dBpowerAMP: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

I wouldn't worry about it. It seems like your getting the same sound quality and a slightly larger file. If you are setting up the encoder correctly and still need more predictable results then use a the CBR method.

I got it to work alright after messing around for an hour or two. I don't know what the problem was, but it's working fine now.

    Thanks!
