This is a really awkward problem, and I have no idea when it started happening because I don't use it that often. But i know it was working fine when i burnt movies this past summer. When I start my computer, the disc drive opens and closes perfectly, and the light blinks to show its detecting and scanning discs from the DOS options. Even during the Windows 7 loading logo, it still works fine. However once it loads the desktop, it stops working. Its still detected in My Computer and in the Device Manager, but not the CDs that are inside and the open button does absolutely nothing! Its as if it was completely dead, but windows detects that its still plugged in...

Anyone know what is causing this? ideally i would like to fix this without formating my hardrive...

try uninstalling it from device manager & restart windows so can find new hardware & load it's drivers.
