hi, i am having problems with my laptop shutting itself down during the compressing and encoding processes. I am using a liteon dvdrw812d burner. ripped over 150 movies fine now midway through the process the laptop shuts itself down. I am not running any other processes during the compression and i leave video preview off. Tried ripping to hard drive first then compressing, tried both recode and shrink but same result. any ideas. running p4 2.6, 512 ram.

    Thanks

Does it shut down during any other process (defraging hard drive, virus scan, etc) or just when you are encodeing?

I had the same problem with my Toshiba.

First, check to make sure the airflow is good. No dust on the intake or output fans. If you see any try using a vacuum cleaner(hose only) to suck it out.

Next, go to Hp's website and check for updates for your particular model. Keep an eye out for Bios updates.

For a laptop heat is always a problem, trying to cram a desktop worth of components into a little space like that produces a lot of heat. One thing that I have that has really helped is a cooling pad. This little thing sits under your laptop and draws all the warm are out and away. It is a really nice thing to have especially when you are doing stuff that requires a lot of work from your CPU. My Toshiba runs as smooth as silk now.

For what it's worth, My opinion is that DVD burning in general is a very hard thing on your computer. It causes a lot of wear and tear on your burner, CPU and hard drive. There are not as many ways to get rid of heat in laptops as there are in desktops. My advice is to not use laptops for very many burns or you risk wearing out the most expensive parts. Maybe if it shutting down in the middle it is trying to tell you before it burns itself up. Again, just my opinon.
    Good Luck!
