I was wondering, if I had a laptop stolen infront of a security camera (like i left it in a place where the camera has a clear view of it) because it was left unattended for like 1 min, and the hotel refuses to allow me to see the camera to find the thief, can the hotel be sued for something? I just know theres a very old law that prob doesnt work anymore that if any injury and theft occurs on grounds, the owner of the grounds is liable for all of it.

Did you call the police and make a police report? There is actually no grounds for them to hand over the tape. I know it sounds messed up, but it is. Besides, they may say that the camera wasn't working (happens more than you might think) or it was a dummy cam (yes...I worked at a few places that had them). Also, the employee on duty may not have access to the security system, and he has to go thru his bosses....and then they decide if they can release it to police.

Agreed, use the police...It would not be appropriate for a hotel (or any other business where people cheat on their marriages) to give a security tape to just anyone.

Surely your property is your own responsibilty, leaving a laptop unattended for even one second isn't particularly clever.

It's not up to the hotel to watch your belongings for you.
