when i connect a windows xp computer to the tv, it supports 1080p fine, the tv is 1920x1080 pixels, and it does this well, no black bars or anything, as you would expect.

however, when i connect my laptop to the tv through hdmi, laptop is windows vista. there is a small black bar all around the screen and as a result, the picture looks a little grainy (of course it would because a true 1080p picture is being scaled slightly down, so there is no 1:1 pixels)...

by the way, when i plug in my laptop i set it so that its displayed 'ONLY' on the external source.

so how do i fix this?...my laptop is a dell, with windows vista. with a radeon 3650.

so how comes the laptop is doing this?...how do i fix it, to get 1:1 1080p?...

Try looking in either your graphics card program that came with your laptop, or going to the graphics options for vista under the control panel (can't quite remember if its actually called graphics options but its similar). You should see an option that allows you to change what resolution the images are being output at. You should also be able to find options in the same window to make the desktop appear on both screens at the same time.

Even if the graphics drivers are installed correctly, I'm not sure how well that GPU handles hd output. Also, here is another reason why it might not work right:

    variable dell
    variable vista

    dell + vista = problems.

You could try booting a linux livecd on the laptop and see if that works.

Also, what dell laptop are you using? If you are connecting it using something other than HDMI (example DVI/S-VIDEO) it might not function correctly

hi im using a studo 17 dell, and yes im using hdmi.

erm, the gpu can definitely handle 1080p because it does display 1080p screen size, just scales it down a little somewhat. this happens for every resolution, 720p or 1440x9xx, whatever resolution it is, it has a little black bars all around the screen.

whyyy does this happen, it makes the image look grainy when its meant to look very sharp. 1080p is the natural maximum resolution of the tv, with 1:1 pixel mapping the picture would look perfect...why does my laptop scale it down...
