hi, i have a IBM Thinkpad, Pentium 2 laptop. When i switch it on it beeps twice and than says 130496KB Ok. Than underneath it says 163 in the top left hand corner. On the right hand corner it says Thinkpad, IBM (the usual company name).
It beeps twice and comes onto another screen with a background saying Thinkpad all over it. Onto the background is a window. The window says 'ERROR 00163'. Underneath it says 'Ok or Cancel'. If i press cancel it reboots and comes up on the same window. If i press enter it comes up with another window asking for the date and time. I enter the correct date/time and press ok.
it beeps three times and reboots! AND IT COMES UP WITH THE WHOLE OLD THING AGAIN. (tells about error and asks for date and time etc)

    Please help!!!

and just recently where it said ERROR 00163 and now also displays error 00301

Any help would be appreciated!!! thanks alot in advance

the cmos battery is what supplies power to a chip that holds the info as time, date, type of hd, cd/dvd rom drive. if was a desktop battery, it would have been a disk battery type cr2032. on a laptop will probably be different as either disk shape or cylinder shaped. the battery might be under the keyboard or thru an access port on the bottom of the laptop.

you already have the bios but have to reconfigure it as it went to default mode because of the dead battery. when the laptop posts before going into windows, it should tell you to press f1 or f2 or del to enter setup which is to change your bios. once in the bios, you'll have to correct the time & date as it will be wrong plus maybe do some other changes.

I can format my hardrive, partition etc. but i cannot access my bios. can i type a command to check if i have a bios??? any other ways to check for a bios. thanks i'm gettin somewhere with ur help!
