I am still looking at external burners since BenQ is going out of the business and they have been my favored brand with consistent quality. I posted earlier and received replies re Plextor, however have found that it is not available here in Canada at least the 740 is not and I am awaiting a call on the 750. I have found an external LG model at Future shop, the LG GSA - E 10L and have googled on it and not found out much user information. The BenQ I liked as the backups that I did played on all of the family's standalone players. I originally had an LG last year and got rid of it with the BenQ due to compatability issues with the family's diverse standalone players regardless of media used. Now I find this LG, however wonder about its compatability as with the BenQ burners that come with the Book Management exe. so that I burn in DVD ROM all of the time I have had no problems. The LG is $200 cdn and I don't want to buy another problem burner at that price. The only other model that was in stock was the Sony DRX 810 UL which I googled and found several negative comments by users and so I have ruled that one out. I thought that I should post and see if anyone has had any hands on experience with this unit and see if I should consider it??? I am not really into this lightscribe technology for labelling, do I have to buy special dvd's for this. I talk to the store sales reps and they can't even answer the question so i post it here. I look forward to comments as I continue to try to figure out what unit will fit my needs. Thankyou.
I didn't see much online regarding this particular LG model. Could u not buy another Benq or another well regarded brand and then get an external case. Combined it wouldn't cost more than $100 that way. I just bought a second Benq1655 from a store in Toronto (Canada Computers) so they're still out there. Just the 1650 which is hard to find.
I have been told in another forum that the Sony DRX 810 UL is the same as the BenQ 164 B, does anyone know anything about that?? Then I can use my Book Management exe. if that is the case off their site, would that be correct or not. I was told that the 810 UL was a badge of the BenQ 164B. Just curious if any happens to know?? Thx for your time and comments!
you can use DVDDecrypter to booktype you LG drive: just select your drive! (4) and you can download this great program here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/DVD_Decrypter/1011845169/1 and Nero can be set to booktype your media automatically when burning!
Thx for that last post, and another Noob question. I don't use the program Decrypter, I use Nero, 1 Click DVD and Sly Soft Clone DVD. Not all on the same computer. Pardon my ignorance, but could I d/l the Decrypter program and then use it to set the Book Type and use one of the other programs depending on which computer I am using? Sorry for the silly question, but I a fledgling at all of this. To me it sounds like I would to use Decrypter. The other program that I use with all of the above is Any DVD. Thx again and I look forward to a reply. Cheers!
if this is an external drive and you are switching it to other computers... I don't know the answer to this question, if moving the drive to the other computers will stop the booktyping! Never did that but I suppose once it's set the drive should be set! ok..... the other solution is to install DVDDecrypter in all the computers..... to me it's a must have!
You can also use DVDInfo Pro and it will set the booktype in any program that you use. I had a Plex 740UF that was a rebadged BenQ and would not be recognized by PlexTools or QSuite. I used DVDInfo Pro and set the booktype in the burner and it would booktype in any program including Clone. You can use the advert program which is free, although it does expire from time to time and you need to redownload and install. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
I didn't know that DVDInfo Pro would booktype the LG drive..... It booktyped my Philips 8631 drive as it was a rebadged BenQ. now does this set the booktyping for external drives that are moved from computer to computer? once the drive is booktyped will it keep the booktyping setting while it it transfered to the new computer or do you have to reset it when you transfer!?
I believe DVDInfo supports all the drives that are capable of booktyping, but if it is an external an moved from comp to comp you would have to have the program on each computer. Once you set it you can forget it, unless you want to change the drive.
Hi, I wondered since I have 3 burners the BenQ external 162I, the BenQ 164B external, and the DRX sony 810UL whether I can book type them each to the same notebook. At present I am only using the 162I and have the other 2 as spares, and I did a d/l of the "Book Management" exe. from the BenQ support site and since it has a drop down of the burner I am using and I select my BenQ 162I. Then I minimize this to the task bar so that I am burning in ROM. That is what the BenQ phone support told me to do and I wanted to see from experienced users if this indeed is the proper process. I look forward to your comments, as I gather that the book setting is not automatically in DVD ROM unless it is set this way?????
