Just activate folding@home, and you will be prompted to download 126mb Life with Playstation.

What? Are you serious? Why would we have to activate FOlding@home in order to get life?

Wow you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Running LWP also runs F@H at the same time, with no conflicts or disruption in interactivity, so why wouldn't you do it? You would be helping to analyze & possibly cure some awful diseases & sicknesses.

It will need to bring in a lot of people because lwp brings down the processing power of folding at home so for every two people already on there will need another person to even it out to where it was.

If I wanted to participate in something liek this I would prefer they did it with SETI than folding@home.

I like it. What's the problem with F@H? You just click on a different icon and get to feel good about not really helping people but theoretically kind of helping people if this math ever comes out to anything important.

Rediculous, you'd rather look for aliens then find cures for diseases.

Just my personal preference. And what happens when they find these cures? Sell the drugs at outragous prices when we (you) have helped them out so much! Do you know how many years they save by setting up this? This works at over 100 times faster than with the single supercomputer they would have used! So 1 years works on this is 100 years for a single supercomputer! And they get it done all for free!

And will they be passing on their savings to their customers who urgently need the newly made medicines which can save their life?

"Selling cures" is not really an entirely new concept. I personally don't mind paying the person or people that worked hard to find a cure that can save my life and millions of people if and when a disease hits them. I hope you don't pass your opinion along to a person who has a loved one with cancer who is hoping for a cure.

    Let me get this straight...

    ...

You'd rather be able to use Life without being able to help save lives at the same time with no cost to you?

It's called service, my friend--and it's not even that if you were going to be using the product anyway.

    ---

"Sir, your total today comes to $38.76."

    "Here you go."

"Oh, and because it's disease awareness day, we'll be donating thirty percent of your purchase to St. Jude's Hospital."

"Really?... Nevermind then. I'd rather just have my groceries."

You cant put a price on a life, its very arrogant to only think of money when it comes to this. If you or one of your family members was dieing of some disease would you tell them to jog off because you had to pay someone?

So what if I already have Folding@Home?

How do I get Life then?

EDIT: "A new version of Folding@Home is available."

    What do you know...

To get life you just activate F@H then start it, it'll say it'll have to do an update and that update will be LWP.

And why are you trying to make me look like the bad guy, I'm just pointing out that the company behind F@H is converting your PS3 into one of their workhorses, unpaid I might add, and if you say they are funding LWP, so what the breakthrough that they could make that cost will just be pocket change to them. Any drugs they make due to this, they wont think, "Oh the public helped us a lot with this so lets reduce the cost of our drug"; they'l be thinking "Woo Hoo this drug will make us millions!" Millions they'll be making thanks to the help of thousands of PS3 users.

It's like you working at your workplace and at the end of the month your empolyers give you a new PS3 game instead of your paycheque. But you're happy with the game cos its a new game for your PS3 and at least the public gets the products you made, while your employer reaps from all the hard work you did.

And the guy who said you cant but a price on a life, tell that to these pharmacology companies who make millions from the drugs they produce, the rich can afford there expensive cures whilst the poor are left with paracetamol!

That's not a similar situation in any way, shape, or form.

A more similar situation would be a man who donates his time after work, along with many others, building a homeless shelter for people in his neighborhood. Another man designed the plans for the shelter, but he's helping out.

If the company that came up with the idea for the shelter decides to charge people to use it, no matter how expensive or inexpensive it may be, the man who volunteered shouldn't expect to be able to use it for free just because he helped out. He knew that he was donating his time in the first place, and not working with expectation to be paid.

    ---

The biggest difference between your analogy and F@H is just that: at work you expect to be paid at the end of the month--when donating time with F@H, that expectation doesn't exist.

I'm not trying to make you out to be the badguy -- my other comment was directed at the first couple of posters that didn't want to activate F@H to get Life.

If you don't want to donate your time, that's your business. If you think you should receive compensation for your time, then get a job working for them.

Isn't having the drug on the market, expensive or inexpensive, worth just having it there? How many people die of terrible diseases every day without any help and in considerable pain and anguish?

Someone coming up with a drug to cure something is just the first step. There are many drugs on the market that decrease in price over time because of competition with other companies producing the same type of drugs and finding alternative ways to make the drug in a cheaper fashion.

Just the ability to be a part of something as big as this is a great honor in my opinion. I'm about to load it up on my desktop, laptop, and PS3 and convince my fiancee to run it and try to convince the people at my local university to put it on their computers.
