    Hello all,

I have a new challenge, and would like some assistance trying to solve this. First let me tell you about my pc. I have an HP Media Center M7680N, core 2 dual 2.13 GHz, 2 GB Memory, 2 X 250 GB SATA drives, 1 DVD Rom drive, and a 16X DVD RW DL Lightscribe SATA Drive. I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and MS SPK 2. Original Software bundle for CD/DVD RW is :CyberLink DVD Play
    Sonic DigitalMedia Plus 7.04
    Sonic MyDVD Plus 6.2
    Roxio DigitalMedia Archive 2

I bought this pc back in Oct 2006, and never gave me any problems with the original hardware. However one day as I was labeling a LS disc, here comes my 2 yr old girl, and unplugs the powerstrip which connected the pc, while it was still working, and the DVD RW drive got damaged. For some reason the LS still worked, but the drive would not detect any discs in any format. So I called HP support, and since I was still under warranty, I got a new drive. The new DVD RW DL LS drive seemed to work well, but I noticed after backing up serveral movies that 3 came out good, while one movie was bad (it would freeze at some point) I tried to troubleshoot this issue, but as you know, this was pricey since the only thing to do is to keep burning movies. I tried different media discs, brands, and software. I used Anydvd with Clonedvd, DVD FAb with DVD decrypter and Nero to burn and always ended up with the same pattern, 3 good burns, on bad one. So by the time I got fed up with wasting blanc dvd discs, my warranty had expired on the drive. So I decided to buy a drive on my own and replace this one.

I went to Best Buy, and got myself a Samsung-20x Internal DVD±RW/CD-RW Super Multi Drive-SH-S203N/BSBN it is also a SATA interface, so the mission was simple. As I connected this new drive, the fisrt thing I did was back-up a movie, and it was the new Harry Potter. It worked like a charm, but upon flipping the LS dvd disc to burn the Label, I immediately got an error: "Lightscribe Error: A problem has occured communicating with your Lightscribe engine. Please restart your pc and try the label again." I went out and got myself every firmware update I could find on the HP website, and in addition, got the firmware for the New Samsung drive from their webpage, and still got the error. Funny thing is that everything else about this drive worked, playback of cd & dvd, and burning on both cd & dvd. So why is the LS the only one with the problem? So I figured I had a faulty drive, went back to Best Buy, exchanged it, and tried it again. Again, same results, error with LS. So at that point, my pc was still open, and I hooked up the old drive (which oh by the way is a toshiba samsung too) and when I clicked on print LS, it worked. The drive was recognized immediately. I then unplugged that drive, plugged in the new drive, and error again. So I called the Geek Squad at BB and ask for support. The offer to try my new drive on one of their pc's, and when they tested it (on a HP Pc similar to mine) the LS worked with no problems. They suggested I un-install the drive, and re-install, also to get rid of Roxio, because it could conflict with Nero. So at this point I have done the first suggestion on un-installing and re-installing the driver. And I did not get any positive results.

I then called HP, and they were reluctant to help because I have bought thiis new drive through a "third party" and they can only support HP products. They suggested that the problem was Nero. (I really doubt that since I can burn movies fine, and use all the other tools nero offers) I did use the Nero Toolkit to diagnose my new drive, and when it scans the drive, It gives me all the things the drive supports, but it does not check the LS. Somehow someway my PC seems to block this LS engine, because the old drive (originally shipped from HP) works fine (with LS only). So I'm running out of ideas. I did do a search and found someone else had the exact same error message, and posted it here, but never got resolved. So again, I'm asking for the community's HELP on this one, maybe there's something I'm not looking at. Please if anyone has ideas, reply so that I can give them a try. Thanks in advance...

You didn't need to dump the Roxio software. The Geek Squad had their heads up their as*es when they told you that.

You could try uninstalling the LightScribe software and installing the latest version. It has to be installed for the LightScribe burning portion, to be used, no matter what other software you are using to burn the labels.

You can get the latest LightScribe software, here:
