    Hello,

I bought a linksys router BEFW11S4 V4 about 6 years ago. it worked great with my toshiba A60 laptop and i've used it on many networks, from NTL to numericable (in france) to clearwire here in ireland and its always worked great. since getting eircom i dont need it anymore so i said i'd give it to my mother. she has a packard bell, windows XP with BT ireland DSL broadband. I hooked everything up as i have done many times before and the computer went bananas, twice. stupidly i tried a second time and the comp just started beeping at me and then when i restarted told me that it had had to close windows to prevent damage being done as there was hardware not installed correctly. i've never had to install the router before, cant find anything on linksys.com, they dont support this old router on live chat and none of the threads on the community forum have anything like this happening. tried to start a new thread there but i think their forum is down or maybe just not open to the irish!

any sort of input would be great but i'm thinking its somehow a lost cause. and yes i followed the installation instructions, everything turned off, hook everything up, turn on modem and wait for it to settle, turn on router (all lights working perfectly) turned on computer - started up fine, tried IE and was told that i couldn't connect and then all of a sudden the screen went blank. thought the mother had a virus (and i was looking at having to do some work for her tonight!) but when i tried again it became apparent that it was the router that was causing the problem.

    totally perplexed here.

    HI lucy84,
Strange problem, the only thing i can suggest is to try resetting the router (usualy have a small button on the back) with a peperclip, hold for around 10 secs or so, and try setting up router from scratch.

Might be worth checking device manager on the comp to see if there are any problems highlighted or conflicts.

Cant really think of anything else.
