hi, i would like to ask whether linksys supports bit torrent downloading. whenever i use bitcomet to download two or more torrents, my connection breaks down and i experience no connection. i have to switch off the router and on again before the connection comes back. this problem does not occur if i connect my computer directly to the modem and not the router. may i know how i can solve this problem? router model: linksys wrt54g (i'm using wired lan) windows version:winxp sp2 modem model: motorola surfboard sb5100 looking forward to hear from you soon.. lawrence
dude by the way how did you set up the wrt54g to allow bittorrent and bitcomet i have the same modem and router but i can't get it to help. and yes the router should support the downloading.
i did not do anything to it and it just works after installing bitcomet. are you behind a firewall? i think disabling it should help bitcomet to work.,. i'm not an expert and i don't think i can help much.. hope others can come it to help

YandaO: I'm having the exact same problems, and it applies to all the torrent programs I have tried. Even if the torrent only downloads a little (not using all the bandwith) it effectively kills everything else, making it impossible to even ping the router from any computer on the network; packetloss at over 80%!!! Router: WRT54G Hardware version: 2.2, Firmware 3.03.9 Modem: SB5100 It's weird that my old piece of sh*t D-Link handles p2p traffic better than a Linksys router. Desperately seeking a sollution as I'm loving this router except for the weird filesharing problems. Edit: FOUND A FIX!!! On the admin page for the router, Setup -> Basic setup I changed the MTU setting from Auto to manual and used 1492 as size. Now I'm maxing out my bandwidth with multiple torrents, downloads and eMule, I'm surfing the web, and listening to web-radio, all smooth, fast and without delay.
Kjellvis thanks! you sound super optimistic and i'm overwhelmed.. it really gives me hope now. i'll try it out later when i have to download torrent files.. hope it'll work! actually what's wrong with d-link? i was quite regretful when i bought this linksys router.. thought it was quite ugly relative to the d-link one..
Nothing wrong with D-Link as such, just that they are overall "cheaper" products. Probably more suited for home users than a powerfull Linksys. In particular I had a very old and very cheap wireless access point, hence the "piece of sh*t" comment. I'm not saying they dont have some good products as well. About the MTU: You may not have the best setting with 1492. Experiment and see what is best for your network. Anyway, I've heard from tech-heads that the torrent problem will be (or already have been) fixed in the next 4.x firmware from Linksys.
oh thanks for your info! so can the 4.x firmware fit on my v2.2 router?? anyway how to i find the right mtu value? do i increase or decrease? by steps of how many? 5,10?
I may have spoken to soon. After two days of top speed and no problems, the connection issues has started resurfacing. I have now changed my firmware to 3rd party and so far it's working I'm now using this one: http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/WRT54G.Sveasoft.Firmware.Alchemy.Final_by_TheIndividual.zip About the MTU: I really dont know. It seems like magic to me. I got two suggestions, 1432 and 1492 and of the two 1492 seemed to work best (at least for a while) About the 4.x firmware: I havent tested it myself, but I've read posts on forums from people who are using it on their 2.2 routers. The only warning Linksys gives is that you may have problems using the high channels (13-14) if you install this on routers sold in europe. I'll let you know how the new "Alchemy" firmware works, so far at least it installed quickly and without problems.
I've run with the aforementioned firmware for a few days now, with very heavy loads (including torrents) on the networks, with multiple computers. So far there has been absolutely no problems. The alchemy firmware installs just like the original, and looks the same, but with a few extra functions (which you can ignore if you want to). With the new firmware I just left the MTU setting as is; Auto. If you still have problems with the router I highly recomend you give the alchemy firmware a try. Took under a minute to upgrade. Just make sure to upgrade it through wired LAN, and that no wireless clients are trying to connect while you upgrade.
ok thanks! but i'm afraid using 3rd party firmware might void my warranty.. is it reversible?? so do you think the 4.x firmware will fix these problems?
Allright, FINALLY BITORRENT WORKS ON WRD54G v4 ! WRT54G v4 - Firmware Version : v4.20.7 - HyperWRT 2.1b1 (Rupan) I just signed up to give you guys my experience: Same problem. Everything is snappy untill BitComet torrent client kicks in with about 30-40Kbts downstream and DNS lookups hang, i.e. internet is slow while torrent looks ok. Router becomes unaccessible as well.. Played with a LOT of settings, in the end installed HyperWRT firmware, right away cood see a HUGE difference! Snappy and fast. Would drop sometimes a packet or two - but only with loads of 250KBts++ with PPPoE client.. What's a point in warranty if product behaves as crap ? I tried different firmwares and 2 failed blocking router. I was able to reinstall original one using Linksys utility. It's been 12+ hours of 100-250 Kbps (I limit BitComet to 250 down and 40 up) - snappy as after the reboot. Praise Rupan! Btw: this was a very first router for me so it's really doable!
