linux and ICH9 chipset

    hi peeps need some info for a linux os i have just got a new laptop acer aspire 8930g i wanna take vista off and use linux i have tryed ubuntu 8.10 everythink works fine apart from no sound did some looking up and found out ALSA dont have the ICH9 chipset on there list of hardware so i would like to no what linux os is compatible with the ICH9 chipset i have tryed gentoo,FC10,ubuntu 8.10 and 8.04 lite and all no go thanks for ya time

    Did you think to Google "ich9 linux driver"? The first result looks to answer your problem, the first page of replies to the question (on the UBUNTU FORUMS coincidentally) points to a realtek page with the driver you require. If the module you require isn't in the mainline kernel, you can be sure that pretty much none of the hundreds of distros will support it. You'll pretty much need to build it yourself, that thread almost certainly spells it out clearly enough, if you can't work it out, post to that thread for help. Only a couple of regulars hang out here, and we don't have every different piece of equipment known to man to troubleshoot on.

    Just one of the problems with buying brand new hardware without research.
