you want to know how to put hd advance on without linux? or to do the thing above to have them coexist.
just a quick update. my source for getting PS2 linux has removed the file. So it is no longer availible from me. I have not yet found another location for the disk set. Sorry guys, but I cant help it.
Hey Lazybum, That would be really handy for me, Do you reckon you could either post it here or pm it to me? Cheers matey
Any ideas on where to find the initial boot disk to start installing the Linux install? Think I am gonna give Black Rhino a go, but dont kno where to start. What exactly needs to be copied across to the hdd in order to install the Linux platform into an HDAdvance partition?
You guys aren't even trying. Get off your ass and do a simple google search and you will find a torrent of the sony linux disc easily. There's one at torrentreactor.net right now, just search for "Linux playstation" and it will come up at the top of the list. It can be found at numerous places if you could be bothered to look. A tip for the newbies: Forget about blackrhino for the moment. It's not a painless install, it has bugs, and it requires a higher level of basic linux knowledge than Sony Linux does. Sony's linux is professional, easy to install, and a great introductory distro for someone new to linux. No, you can't use binary rpm's from other platforms such as x86, this should be obvious. Yes it is an older distro with some older software. Does it really matter ? No. It still runs firefox VERY well, and performs most tasks with ease. If you want to start out with linux, just get the Sony kit or the software. Once you've installed it and used it for a few months, then consider repartitioning and installing BR alongside. There's not really any need, it's not a revolution or anything, it's just a fairly decent debian port. No big deal. It's what the user does to get something out of linux, not what distro you run. Linux on ps2 should be a learning experience. If you really want a linux box, go buy a $20 IBM thin client off ebay that comes with linux on a flash card. It's fun, it's not meant to be practical. But it does give a nice sense of satisfaction when you get it working. http://members.westnet.com.au/pawz/PS2Linux.JPG <-- my machine.
Ok...my question is...how do I get to a prompt on the PS2 to make CD's? Does just booting to the RTE disc give you this ability?
If you have BOTH linux DVD's from sony, you put the first one in and it will boot to a screen. On that screen it will say "install", "boot", and something else. You choose INSTALL if you are trying to install it, and BOOT if you have already installed it and want to load it up. Its really that simple.
"INSTALL" puts me at some sort of command prompt where I can make directories? The tutorial seems to gloss over making the initial partition and how you actually get to a command prompt.
Pawz... you pointed us to what we already kno, I have tried finding a torrent site that has it but torrent reactors torrent file points to a site that has been shut down... As I'm obviously too lazy to have already looked into this can you perhaps give me a pointer to where I can now find it? Thanx
Try eMule. There are tons of other things there as well. More than I ever saw on Morpheus or iMesh. http://www.emule-project.com Make sure you read the Help file to get this program running very fast, and make sure you open ports TCP 4662 and UDP 4762, both incoming and outgoing. These are the default ports eMules uses, but you can change them in the Options. Just a side note, I got my hands on a copy of the PS2Linux discs about a month ago. After the you select install and it asks for "Disc 2" it kept telling me that "Disc 2" was the "Wrong Disc". After several attempts at trying to install this, I got angry. Then something happened that I can't explain. When the PS2 asks for "Disc 2" (every time it asks), HOLD the eject button in until one second after the blue light stops flashing. Then, to switch to "Disc 2", HOLD the eject button in for one second after the blue light stops flashing to have the disc tray draw back into the console. You might have to do this trick twice depending on what part of the install you are on, but this seems to work for me very well. Also, I have a SCPH-39001 chipped with a DMS3+ using the version 2.4B5 flash, although I don't think the flash version has anything to do with this "bug" because I tried every version of flash that was out there before I stumbled across this odd behavior. Maybe it's just a compatability issue with the DMS3+ chip and my backups of PS2Linux. Now if I could only find a wiring diagram of the official Sony VGA Cable (the one that requires Sync-on-Green, because my CRT does support it.) I can find pinouts all day but I don't know much about video signals, so I really need to know how it is wired. And I have tried to use the "Sync Splitter" diagram that is out there (see below) but I seem to have a problem within Linux running KDE. When I maximize a window, the screen goes black. The same thing happens when I gradually stretch the window towards the lower right corner. I'll get about an inch away from the corner and get the same black screen. If I'm still holding the mouse button and blindly stretch the window back to a smaller size, the screen comes back. This happens with every resolution, refresh rate, and color depth combination that is available. Am I missing something somewhere? http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=24593&highlight=vga+pins http://www.pingouin.be/ps2/sog-lm.html Just thought I would throw in my 50 cents...
I seemed to have found the problem with my VGA glitch I mentioned recently. Appearently, I overlooked that the LM1881 chip outputs VSYNC (vertical sync) and CSYNC (composite sync) signals. It does [bold]not[/bold] output a HSYNC (horizontal sync) signal. Some monitors will accept a HSYNC or CSYNC from pin 13 of the VGA connector (see link #1 below.) I don't think my Hewlett Packard Ultra VGA 1280 monitor applies to this. I'm pretty sure that it only accepts HSYNC on pin 13 and not CSYNC. I think I can solve this issue by adding a couple of very simple logic gates in the circuit to convert/pull out the HSYNC from the CSYNC line (see link #2 below.) I have a bunch of old RadioShack "Engineer's Mini-Notebooks" lying around that I know have schematics for simple transistor type logic gates in them. I will post back more when I get the logic gate transistors in place on my circuit. [bold]This ONLY applies to the VGA circuits that use the LM1881 or similar chip. The EL4583 (or similar) chip DOES have a HSYNC pin, so there is no need for the logic gates.[/bold] Link #1 http://www.gamesx.com/hwb/co_VGA15.html (A decent pinout of a VGA connector.) Link #2 http://http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/faq/vga2rgb/scart.html (Read the part that starts with "The circuit have one serious drawback" in the section "Composite sync to HSYNC and VSYNC converter".)
