linux receivers are not for those who want a quick fix. its constant updating and config changes and an understanding of linux file structures is essential

so in reality there is no best box. its what cactikid says, what do you want to do with it. blade is fine, so is dm800, so is vu+. you need to deine what you would want and then the choices become more limited

excellent set up for the dreambox from piopat which you could share with your family and friends why have to wait for support from any box manufacturer when you can get lots and lots of patches for the Dreambox which is not closed sourced once ya get the linux box up and running you wont be disappointed also if the support for a closed box dries up so will your box with patches and could become like the Sv combo is at the present time as soon as this box needs a patch there wont be one as like the cable side because its closed sourced this box is now at the present time defunked on the cable side for the extra few pounds get a box that has lots and lots of support the linux dreambox 800hd

Piopat tutorial well worth a read i though i would not be able to set mine up now im up and running a dream 800hd picture is crystal clear as well

    Difference between P and I

How 1080i and 1080p Are Both The Same and Different

1080i and 1080p are both High Definition display formats for HDTVs. 1080i and 1080p signals actually contain the same information. Both 1080i and 1080p represent a 1920x1080 pixel resolution (1,920 pixels across the screen by 1,080 pixels down the screen). The difference between 1080i and 1080p is in the way the signal is sent from a source component or displayed on an HDTV screen.

In 1080i each frame of video is sent or displayed in alternative fields. The fields in 1080i are composed of 540 rows of pixels or lines of pixels running from the top to the bottom of the screen, with the odd fields displayed first and the even fields displayed second. Together, both fields create a full frame, made up of all 1,080 pixel rows or lines, every 30th of a second.

In 1080p, each frame of video is sent or displayed progressively. This means that both the odd and even fields (all 1,080 pixel rows or pixel lines) that make up the full frame are displayed together. This results in a smoother looking image, with less motion artifacts and jagged edges.

Most things on sky HD are broadcast at 720p live sport is set at 720p anyway so no real point in having 1080p or 1080i

Since i set mine up dont have a bother on it and lots of others i know also have dreamboxs and would not swap them either so down to preference really but i know i would prefer a box that can be patched by anyone and not be waiting on patches from a closed sourced box.

As said before had both, dont rate the dm800 personally but each to there own I suppose, also try both then have your opinion like I have.

I can say without a doubt the picture quality on the dm800 is poor compared to the Blade media 7000s, I tried one for 2 weeks and sports channels were constantly glitching on the same sat the blade used and which has been on for the past month with very few interruptions.

I am glad you have found what you deem adequate but as someone that has tried them both, I prefer the blade. Just my opinion and I wont post the spec's and the spiel about the open/closed source argument lol.

hitech, there are solutions. it just takes a feckin age. in-line amplifiers, dish adjustments etc.. instead buy a quality box (and i have very much learnt the hard way). I enjoyed the play but found it was better to just buy a proper linux receiver with quality tuners. and while many of my folks have a dm800 i would not promote it to anybody. yet the dm500 is a great starter box for those who would like to learn linux. i just think if you want to spend a bit more money i would never spend it on a dreambox

Do you say this from experience ??
If so of what ... surely an original DM would have no problems with tuners
As for me ive had my DM 800 HD clone now for over a 15 months changed the tuner (at the time the new Rev L .... M is now out) and get no problems at all
So can recommend the DM 800 HD especially considering the price and support forums out there
must be the most popular box on the market which speaks for its self

whats the dreambox hd like when it comes to recording? just want to know people, thats all. when it coms to recording on the blade hd, its just excellent quality all round, and enough people have said how good the picture quality is, so im not gonna repeat. the 7 days epg works now, just fantastic all round box. blade is a 5-Star box for me, and i wouldnt swap it for any other box.
