I have a 1.0 xbox that is modded with xecuter and 200 gig hd. I have a lot of movies, games, and mp3 running with xbmx as my front end. I would like to install linux as a way to browser the web and getting my email. Is there a way to do this without messing up anything currently on my drive. I guess I am looking for a dual boot?

Can anyone help me with this?

    Cheers,

I ended up using gentoox. Installation was very simple. Just FTP aobut 4 GB of files over and all is good. I installed Apache, PHP and MySQL today as well. Very easy and I it is launched from XBMC. Couldn't ask for more at this point. I am getting another 1.0 xbox just to have a dedicated linux machine to play with. I can build an xbox for about 100 USD so can't really beat it for messing around. Only thing I wish was better was running it larger than 800x600. But then again on a TV it is pretty hard to read much larger than that.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Cheers,

    Ed

pardon my lack of knowledge....ive just caught wind of mod chips....and i would like to know exactly what they can do for just a plain old gamer like myself...ive heard you can store a game disk in memory so you no longer have to use a disk,,,,,is that true...or did i buy the whole bag of magic beans?

The standard Xbox hard drive is either 8 or 10GB in size. If you mod your Xbox, you can send things (FTP) to and from your Xbox HD. So say you mod your Xbox, by either softmodding it or throwing a modchip in, you would have around 4GB of free space that you could work w/; the rest is already mostly used up.

Now, the standard Xbox game is 3-4GB in size, so you can only fit around 1 Xbox game on your stock HD. Once the game is on your HD, you can then play it right off of it instead of using the disc. This decreases your loading times greatly, I would say it loads about 30-40% faster.

Now, if you want to go all out, you could order say a 200GB Maxtor 7200RPM drive for your Xbox. Then you can load on many Xbox games on your HD and you don't have to worry really about deleting the games on your HD right away because you have a lot of space to work with.

Here is a good topic to look at if you decide to start modding your Xbox:

Also, if you want to softmod your Xbox instead of putting a modchip in, check out this little guide:

c21rocks, I currently have over 5000 mp3s, 5 DVD movies, and about 25 xbox games on my xobx. I have a 200GB drive in mine with a mod chip. Now I have linux on it as well. I highly suggest you get a big HD. I actaully wish I would have gone bigger than 200GB now.

    Good luck.
