What do you think the best Linux O/S is? I'm thinking of installing Linux on one of my laptops but I'm never worked with the system.

@abuzar1 I had a look around for a floppy version and found one http://jspiro.tripod.com/linux/hal91.htm

@uniique1 I've never really used Linux so am not too sure which versions are the best. I've only started to use Linux from the live CD which allows you just to boot off the CD without having to install it, go to http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html if you want to download Linux (pretty much any version), try a live CD version to get the hang of it like i am.

Thanks man. So booting from the CD I guess I would just set my DvD 1st in boot order and it boots and runs that way?

Yep set the bios up to boot from CD and it just boots the whole thing off the CD, Just make sure you choose the right platform (64bit, Intel, etc) and your all set :) There's only one thing am not too sure about tho and that's saving data i think you can set it up to save to your Windows hdd or just use a USB pen but I've yet to try.

I've had great luck with knoppix (www.knoppix.org)which is a live cd linux distro but only on desktops. Laptops have historically been tougher under linux but the ease of use has been much better over the last year or so. I have found Red Hat better for laptops but it's a full 4 cd install so it's a vicious circle for you. Please keep us posted as to your results.

I'm pretty sure that running the O/S that way isn't the best way for long term purposes. I'll probably do like you just to try it out or install a version on one of my external drives and boot from there. I found 1 version called aLinux. I went ahead and made a disc with the .iso but I'm still reading to see what the major differences are between all the programs. Thanks for all the info..

Man, Iafter seeing your post, I'm think I may need to wip together a quick PC with one of my spare Asus motherboards and 40 or 80GB HDD and, install the O/S to that for "training purposes". I really wanted to use my 2nd laptop but I don't want anything I can prevent "influence" bad ideas about the O/S.

But yeah, I'll keep the both of you up on how it goes.

    Thanks again
