Arghh...can't decide which one I want. Anyone have any opinions on these two models? This will be pretty much a dedicated burner - I have another drive for ripping.

Use will be largely for backuing up my DVD collection and the occassional burn of captured home videos. My primary concern is speed, compatibility of media, and durability (in that order). DL isn't huge to me, but a little important.

Anyone's opinion would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2 NEC burners one is about 3 years old and the other is a 3520A about 3 months old. Reliabilty great. Possibly better media compatibility for NEC over Liteon, but Liteon DVD+R preferences over DVD-R can be easily ovewrcome by Booktyping to DVD-ROM with standard firmware (harder with NEC). Nec is quieter. Liteon is a faster reader. Burn speeds should be comparable.
Super NEC price on Newegg.com is just over $40, sometimes with free shipping (deal can change daily, sometimes). Best deal going.

Thanks! With regard tot he NEC, did you find it necessary to flash to the Liggy & Dee firmware to get your full use out of the 3520? Such a hard choice to make.

    Ugh.

I use hacked firmware on my 3520. The riplock is removed and now it book types +R media. A definite improvement over the stock firmware.
