For one thing, look at the cd's and dvd's you buy before you get them. A lot of them have certain speeds they support and nothing faster than that works well.

I have a Lite-on burner and a Lite-on writer and am happy with them. After useing substandard crap that came with computers, I bought a -rwriter. Really been happy with the speeds it produces.

I am not talking about quality of media. The fact that Nero is only detecting the writer's DVD-ROM read speed (which is 12x) is what concerns me.

I use to have a pioneer a04 and got sick of the slow speed i was going to opt for the pioneer 106 but even though i already have my second writer which writes at 52 speed cdrs i went for the same writer as yourself.I have had no problems with nero your problem may come from conflict in your software as some programmes conflict with others.Try running nero on its own on your system. If it works just add one other programme at a time until you get back to square one then you will know which don't run to well with others. One thing i should mention which you may already know if you puchase the red daterwrite dvd-r 4 speed these will only write 1 speed.Yellow or white daterwrite will write at the correct speed. This is also the same with a couple of other brands.
    Thanks
    John.
