    I have a Liteon SHW 16H5S (lightscribe)
When I follow instuctions I found here for booktyping with DVDD and/ or Nero all seems successful in either program, however, on my DVD+R burn with DVDD nothing seems to change. My DVD recorder/player (standalone) recognises the disc as a DVD+R still.
I watched the log in a nero burn and it said "changing booktype to DVD-ROM" in one of the lines. Again no recognition from my standalone. (all my burns play ok as an aside)
I used one of the utilities in Nero (drive speed I think) with my recent +R burns and it said disc type +R...Booktype DVD-ROM but if i put the same disc in DVDD under iso read it says disc type & booktype are DVD+R. Whats going on, is this normal, do standalones not normally show a booktype change although it has been changed??? I don't know which to believe.
I wish I kept the logs from DVDD and Nero but I didn't, sorry.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi,
DVD+R is disc type. In other words the disc type is DVD+R. This doesn't/can't change. It's the discs physical ID. Booktype is the way your writer writes to the disc. This can be changed to either DVD+R or DVD-ROM. Most stand alones will only ID disc type. Some do allow more optoins in their menu.

Try this free program. It'll tell you exactly if that backup is booktyped:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm

If it looks like this where it says booktype, then it's booktyped:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MCC-004-000]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
    Manufacturer ID : [MCC]
    Media Type ID : [004]
    Product Revision : [Not Specified]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If they are not booktyped, here's the link to lite-on's booktyping utility:

    http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm

You'll have to download that utility, and set it to booktype your plus media to dvd-rom. I can't guarantee it work for your specific Lite-on lightscribe, but it couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the help, thats great.
Will give that liteon utility a go.
    One more question.
Do I have to set the booktype for each BRAND of +R or +RW I use or once Booktype is set for +R and +RW will it always booktype any media brand of that type??

    Thanks again.

I don't know much about that utility. Try booktyping everything: +r/+rw/+r DL.

Some programs are different. I use qsuite, and I've got it set up to do all 3 of them.

Dvd decrypter is another: I believe you can only set it to one of those types of discs at a time. I keep mine set at +r to dvd-rom,which is the majority of my media.

Mort81 is all over that utility.I haven't seen him around much.

    Hi,
The Lite-On utility will do either. Run program & set new bitsetting & leave program. The drive will revert back once pc is rebooted. Run program & set new bitsetting, having set save setting. The drive will retain this setting even after pc reboot.

    An update,
I used the Liteon utility. (thanks)
It seems Nero 7 burns are booktyped but any I burn with DVDD are not.
Maybe DVDD does'nt support my new Liteon Drive despite reporting a success when changing the booktype.
I note on the "IMGBURN" website (the successor to DVDD for burning only) the change log includes "Added: Support for newer LiteOn drives & their new features in the 'Advanced Settings' window".
