So this probably seems like most other password issues on here, but none seem to match up well enough to get a solution. I have XP Pro with two user accounts, neither have passwords assigned to them. When I start windows initially, it works fine. click on the icon, it starts, for either account. the problem comes from when the computer sits for a while, even though I have it set to not go into standby, it still does and when it comes back 90% of the time it asks for a password, when there isn't one. Sometimes, though not often, when I just switch users without going into standby, it will do it then too. I've been dealing with this for a few months now, usually having to restart the system to get around the glitch. Well I'm sick of wasting time waiting for the system to restart, so I thought if I just set a password to it, it should just work. Well as it turns out, even with a password assigned to the users, it still will not work. Initial boot is fine, asks for password and it starts. then if it comes back from standby, or returning from the screen saver (again, i have it set to just start back into the last open profile, it still goes to the windows screen), it will ask for a password but the same one that worked a half hour earlier no longer works and again, I have to restart the system. Help? Suggestions? Thanks, -Andrew
Just to add something else, reinstalling windows is really the absolute last thing I want to do. Something I noticed to the timing of this happening, it was right around the same time that I had an authentic windows checker program run and told me I have a bogus copy of windows. It's pro, we have the same one running of a few computers now, it doesn't surprise me that this came up, but it makes me wonder if that program screwed with something because it's a bad a "bad" copy now.
