After having a hard time preserving subtitles when using programs lke "Smartripper" to rip to ".vob" files, I want to try ripping straight to AVI. Can someone recomend a software app or maybe explain why I never get the subtitles? My plan is to rip to AVI or MPEG, then from there use something such as DivX to compress the video before burning it to SVCD. Thank yoy!

    Hi balzak,

Subtitles must be ripped separately, with for instance SubRip.

SVCD is MPEG-2, not DivX/MPEG-4. How do you want to play the CD ? With your PC or with your standalone player ?

If you want to watch the movie on PC, you can use Nero Recode (included in Nero 6) to convert to NeroDigital (MPEG-4) and burn to a CD. Then use Nero ShowTime to play the disc.

If you want to watch the movie on your standalone player, do the same with a rewritable CD and check whether your player accepts it :)

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR DVD2AVI(not dvd-to-avi) NEEDED

Does anybody knows how dvd2avi works??? or if it is any other program that does the same function (or dvd2mpeg as well)??????

The aim is to isolate some scenes using eg pinnacle studio from vob files.

NVE (NeroVision Express) can edit a VOB file. Notice it takes only the first audio track.

You can export the edited file to DV AVI or to any AVI format if you have the codec. You can even export to MPEG-2 but I don't know whether NVE will re-encode the video or not. Give it a try.

    For balzaK (or anyone interested)
Here is the simple way to copy movie only with functional title selection, if you have the right software. I know, not many programs that will preserve the title selections and copy movie only. I have been doing this for quite a while with DVD Xcopy Platinum. In the advanced setting you are able to copy the main movie file and the title selections are preserved (nice algorithm). 321 Studios is no longer able to produce this software, but some copies may be left in retail venues. Their RF version works with some DeCSS software. There is a preview function to ensure you can find the movie file. You can even choose between wide of full screen if the target disc has that option. All the other software I have seen copies the title selections and they end up as useless icons without function. Nice thing about the program is a large users manual in PDF format for those smart enough to use it.
