Looking for good alternative for windows movie maker...anyone know any good programs like that?

I'm looking for software to make trailer-type videos, for example, I want to take home movies and such and take bits of the videos out, put them all tpgether then add music of special effects. Sort of like a movie trailer, if you get what i mean, or even like 'fanvideos' that people make.

Now, windows movie maker worked well, it was easy, very simple and i was able to add music to the videos and mute the origianls while adding special effects BUT... Now it's freezing on me all the time, it crashes whenever i use too many clips and i am only half way through so i can no longer use that.

What i'm looking for is a program I can use that isn't too difficult, will have the features to let me do what i want and something that has features like windows movie maker, i'm looking for an alternative to that because i cant use it anymore.

Any suggestions?

thanks Jeanc1, i actually forgot to mention that i did try that (well, the trial of it) last night. But I had problems with it, it seemed to mess up my computer settings so i uninstalled it. Thanks anyway.
