I am upgrading a computer to use as a home 'server' of sorts. I will be using it to store my Dvd's and record cable television to later stream to my tv. It will also be used as a backup for my laptops. I was going to buy a 1 TB hdd but was told two 500 gigs would be better/quicker for streaming. I know that used is RAID 0 will have better data access but nothing else. Is it worth it to buy the two or just go ahead and get one big HDD. I will be putting a 500 gig in anyway for the backup HDD for the laptops, the 1 TB will be for movies and shows.
RAID0 is utterly unnecessary for a home server, you should only really consider RAID for a server when you plan to use at least 4 drives, preferably 5 or more, and run enterprise-level RAID such as RAID5 or RAID6, and you'd be doing it for redundancy, not performance. A single 1TB drive is the simplest and most cost-effective solution for your purposes.
Thank you. That was actually what I was hoping. I know I will probably fill up the HDD(I have quite a few dvd's I will be backing up on the HDD plus whats coming in the future) and quite a few songs also that I will be putting on it. So I should still be fine until I need 4-5 drives. Which I hope will be far in the future.
