Hey everyone, around the beginning of 2008 I built a really good gaming PC, even now it can handle basically everything. But it's just the ATI Card I'm worried about, I've overclocked it and it's running FINE, it doesn't overheat even under load, it stays cool and has a healthy lifespan. But I'd prefer an NVIDIA card. Purely because they perform better and I'd like to future-proof my system. I was looking to spend from 100-200 MAX on one, as long as it will perform well. I found an XFX 9800GTX+ 765MHz Edition card for £150 and was wondering whether I should get that. Worth it? Also I'm selling my HD 3850 if anyone is interested, 720/870MHz clocks.
i think that upgrading to a 9800gtx+ wont give you that much of a boost in gaming. i would wait and get more money. save it up and get something better.
I would but my PSU is only 450w Corsair VX Series... :/... And I only want it to be able to play unreal at about 80fps and I'd like to change from ati to nvidia because the graphics on Farcry2 and Crysis are messed up, they look weird, and you can't fix it, well, AFAIK you can't...
I am not familiar with UK shops, but this card will be MUCH better than the GTX 9800+. http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetails.asp?ProductID=5509&categoryid=116 or http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetails.asp?ProductID=5435&categoryid=116 The Corsair PSU is high quality and will run your system fine.
Oh I really didn't think that the 4870 was better than the 9800, xP. I've heard bad things about ATI though and the experience I've had with this 3850 was VERY GOOD but some games were just a bit iffy, as in farcry 2. It looked like complete SHYTE. I'm not sure why, but it just did. Maybe I needed a hotfix or something... That 4870 is ideal for my price range and if I sell this 3850 that'll boost a bit of well-needed cash. Thanks for the info about the PSU aswell. .
well if you do plan on getting an hd4870, i can say that it is ALOT better than a 9800gtx+. at 1680x1050, i can play crysis max, with AAx4. if you really want to stick with nVidia though, then you can always get the GTX 260, i would say its like the ATI HD4870 counterpart.they are about the same level, though i think the HD4870 is slightly better in some areas. also most monitors refresh rate is about 60fps, so playing a game at 60fps and 80fps wouldn't make a difference.
I've researched a lot about FPS and Hz and yes that's correct, except my FPS goes 200 198 197 196 200 197 198 200 etc.. So I can't really VSYNC it. But anyway, I think I'm going to get that 4870. It looks very nice and it's "QUITE" cheap. I'll look around on ebuyer and eclipse too. Thanks . Also how do you think this setup will perform on games - Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz @ 3.2GHz (vcore @ 1.4) Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) Dual Channel XMS2 Ram Running at 5-5-5-15 HD 4870 512MB Thanks
Also, I was thinking about getting this card - http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetails.asp?ProductID=5706&categoryid=116 It doesn't say whether it's retail, so I'm a bit weary about it not having the connections, or maybe that's me being a noob but I'd hate to get it here and it doesn't work properly -_-.
I wouldn't know about whether it is retail or not. I am not in the UK, so I have no idea what shops are available. Hopefully someone from the UK will pop in and give some info. @i_am_alex, The HD 4870 will outperform a HD 3650 crossfire setup.
The HD4870 is about six times as powerful as an HD3650, so even in crossfire, you're getting triple the performance by choosing a 4870. An HD4870 will work fine with a Corsair VX 450W.
I'm not using a 3650, I'm using a 3850 >_> That's good to know, you were the one who gave me advice a year ago about my PC, remember, it was 15 pages long? Haha. I can't wait till I get the card though. I need to sell my HD3850 and I already made a thread about that on Sell your stuff. We'll see what happens. Also, Gigabyte or Sapphire? The gigabyte card is about £5 more.
The HD4870 is about 2.5-3x as powerful as the HD3850. Either brand is good, you may as well go with the one that costs less.
After doing a bit of research (staring at the pictures) I found out that ONE is OEM and one is RETAIL. So I'm getting the Gigabyte. My motherboard is also gigabyte but I have absolutely no clue if that would increase the effectiveness of the card in any way or not. Thanks for your advice sam. I'll get back to you when I get the card.
No, the motherboard doesn't really have anything to do with it. You're wise to get a retail graphics card as they do come with worthwhile connectors and cables you can use.
Yeah, the 3850 I got just came with the outdated drivers disc and crappy neverwinter nights 2 . I was looking at the Radeon 9800 bundle back in 2003, came with full retail of Serious Sam, Rune, Drivers, oni + 4x4. Bleh. PS : What do you think of this? http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/134...logy/radeon-hd-4870-512-mb-gdd.html?srcid=867
That's a very good price, on what is a good card. Pixmania are probably the slowest of all the online computer component retailers, but if you've got patience, that's a good deal right there. While I'm at it, the HD4870 is about 30% faster than the 9800GTX+ and 25% faster than the HD4850. There's nothing wrong with how ATi cards handle Far Cry 2 except a bug with when Anti-Aliasing was used, trees turned into green triangles. I think Catalyst 8.12 fied that.
wouldn't it be better to get this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801 its slightly more expensive, i think $20 USD if i did my conversions right. its just the 1gb version of the HD4870 by sapphire. you'll still get a slightly better performance than the 512mb one, and if your using a larger monitor, you'll see an even better performance. also, i think it'll help with AA, im not sure i think i read that somewhere.
