I am having a problem with freshly encoded AVI/DivX videos. When playing them in WMP I cannot view any of the video for the first couple seconds. I just loaded one problematic AVI into VirtualDub and all the frames appear to be there, if I hit "key frame forward" I get to the approximate point that WMP is willing to show the movie. Are my files corrupted, or is the issue in WMP not properly playing my files?

I believe that I have seen these symptoms with every attempted DivX encoding I have done over the last couple years, which means that the problem is either in my software or my technique. I am using the AD guide named "Copy your DVD into DivX format - Guide for 4:3 movies" (substituting DGIndex for DVD2AVI on the most recent attempt). I am encoding with DivX Pro 5.1.1 using a "first pass" encoding followed by a single "nth pass" encoding.

I apologize if this is in a FAQ somewhere, couldn't find any obvious matches in my searching.

Okay, looks like i answered my own question. The codec I was using to play back the video was apparently crap and dropping the first key frame.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to sync my video and audio. Thanks for the wonderful website, I'd never get this far without it :)
