My ability to copy movies has stopped. First the cpu would just shut down while reading files. I was told to check the fan to see if the cpu was overheating, the fans are working but there was a lot of dust collected and was removed. The dvd reader was again tried but it wouldn't even start reading the source disk. I checked the ide channels and noticed the secondary ide channel was not present. It appears that it was lost during one of the cpu lock ups. How do I re-install the secondary ide channel and is there anything else I can do to get my dvd x copy to work again.
I'm not sure about this... You can try this link http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-hard-drive.htm
before you go into all this technical stuff and see if there is something internally wrong with your computer..... I would check these things out: Does the DVD play in your drive? If so then you don't have a reading problem... it could very well be DVDXCopy. that's an old program that will have problems with the newer DVD releases! I would use this free program, called RipIt4Me, just download the programs and follow the guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110, when you said that the computer shut down while reading files does that mean it was playing the DVD? or you were using DVDXCopy and it did that? Check to see you don't have a virus. use your anti virus program and do a full system scan! If you can tell us more about your PC like how old and what your specs are and what programs you are using would help out.
I just found this thread ..... another one with a reboot problem: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/415175
