I am hoping I have not destroyed my system... although I was prepared for the worst when I got inside. I installed the Magic V and put everything back together. Plugged in and the red standby button came on, but when I tried to reset the drive would spin for a second, the light would turn green and then everything turns off. I check connections resoldered points i thought were loose... same thing. Now I have tried to back out of the install. Took out chip and wires.. no visible solder bridges.. now when I press reset the light turns green and the fan or drive spins, but black screen, no sound nothing happens... and will not eject. Please help!
ok... I have taken apart my PS2 yet again (I am getting very proficient if anyone needs help with a V5 PS2). The only place I can see any solder that may have bridged over would be where the "n" and the "m" connection is. I dont think it accross all three places, but maybe "n" and the adjacent point. Is there anywhere that posts a thorough trouble shooting guide, or what the different chips control on the PS2? I dont mind trouble shooting if I had a hint at where to start.
a good place to start would be to buy some de-soldering braid and remove all traces of the solder from your install
I have already desoldered everything and I have even checked adjacent contacts with a multimeter to see if there were any bridged contacts. I have found none. All of my fuses seem to be intact and i took pretty good care of all ribbon cables while taking apart and putting my system back together. I was not sure if it could cause problems, so I even went back and cleaned off any residual flux with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. I feel like I have done everything that I can... and like I said the contacts all look relatively unspoiled, though I have read that the PS2 is notoriously sensative to too much heat, i.e. solder iron on the board for too long. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated, and if you think any further info on the mod, system, or what I did, please ask and I will provide any info. I have started to consider getting a refurbed mainboard... are there any other options aside from a new system? THanks again!
Same thing happened to me but with a V3. I tried absolutely everything I could think of but I still got the black screen. Are you sure you have checked all the fuses. There are 15 on a V5 PS2. And if you're sure you haven't got solder bridges around MNOP then it's probably not fixable.
I have only checked the fuses that I have read about, i.e. the mainboard fuse... I think that is the white one in the middle. And then the two fuses on the power board. Even if it is a fuse...is that easily replaceable? I dont know much about electronics or how the PS2 works, but I would figure that the symptoms are a tell tale sign of something being wrong. And even if i did wreck this board beyond repair, I would love to know what it was that I did wrong, so if I decide to get another board and attempt this mod (which I was fairly certain would work after everything was put back together the first time) that I take special care not to do again.
I've been through this before with many newbies. Go and get a good magnifying glass - they are a couple of bucks. Have a look at the install very carefully, looking at every connection for bridges (yours is a bios bridge). If the bridge isn't on the PS2 bios chip it'll be on the modchip itself - between solder points or on the IC legs. [bold] IF YOU HAVE A BRIDGE ON THE IC PINS - YOU WILL NOT SEE IT WITHOUT AN OPTICAL TOOL - TRUST ME ON THIS! [/bold] If you are still not finding anything - take that chip out of there along with anything left behind. Take a toothbrush and gently scrub your board down in case you got a flyaway when you were triming a wire etc. Put your system back together without the chip to see if it still works. If it does - look for some online tips on soldering - specific to mochip installs. Lastly - start over and take your time OR pay a professional. Thank you.. this is very helpful and exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. Which chip controls the bios. I have already removed the modchip a few days ago and checked visually without a magnifying glass, but I did however check adjacent connections with my multimeter and it didnt show there were any bridges that way. If there were any bridged connections wouldnt the multimeter show that?? Once again I appreciate all the help with this!
The multimeter will of course show any continuity on the entire connection ie. the connections to the BIOS (OPMN & QTUVR) and to the modchip itself. If you tear the chip out and the PS2 doesn't work, it is possible that one of your component connections made the component come loose - I'm not sure exactly about a v5 exactly - but and resistor/capacitor connections. Also I know it sounds stupid but make sure you are putting the console back together properly - there are grounds you may not be aware of - to either the top or bottom metal casing of the motherboard. Also, could you post EXACTLY what the unit is doing when you try and boot it up. If you post a reply tonight again - I'll try to answer again tonight as well. Cheers!
THank you yet again. First off I am fairly certain everything has gone back together exactly how it was before it was ever opened. Ok.. when I initially installed the chip, put everything back together and plugged it in, the red standby light came on. When I press reset, it flashes green and the fan came on for a second. THen goes back to idle with the red light. Same thing happens when the eject button is pressed. I went back in checked everything and resoldered a few connections i though might be loose or just not hearty enough and put everything back together. Same symptoms. Now I figure I will cut my losses with the chip and desoldered everything and once again put it back together after inspecting potential bridges. Now when it is plugged in the red light comes on and when reset is pressed the fan kicks on like normal and the green light stays on. Nothing happens(black screen, no sound, no eject drive does not spin). If you press reset again (while it is still green) it will flash just after it is depressed. and eventually it shuts off to red again. Thanks!
