Is there a reliable mail order business located in the US that sells quality DVD's at a good price. Also while reading I noticed that certain brands made in certain countries are ok while others are not. It would appear that the only way that this can be determined is by looking at the packaging of each item?

Is there a rule of thumb that can be used to make buying DVD's an easier process. You have single layer, DL, diferent formats, different manufacturers, countries where manufactured etc. The only thing I think I am sure about is don't buy memorex.

    Thanks

I recommend Verbatim for Single & Dual Layered DVDs. I've had the least amount of troubles with them. Not sure where to get them from in the US though.

patm1998- Buy By Mail ? Why not online ? I'll forsake the obvious and assumme that's what you meant ? All the info the other members provided you with is good solid advice ! The Retailers mentioned have stellar reputations at afterdawn .com so you know there should'nt be any problems !!! I've have ordered from Supermediastore & Meritline several times with no worries from either ! Rima .com has a excellent reputation as well but I can't say I've ordered from them personally yet so that's all I can say about them ! As for Rules of Thumb Well there could be a Few !. One simple rule is if you Buy Retail DVD media= {Branded like Sony, Verbatim ect... } DVD+R and DVD-R media will be the same price ! But if your buying media on-line like Taiyo Yuden , Verbatim , Ritek , ect... The DVD+R's will usually always be more expensive by a few cents or so ! keep in mind we're talking about Bulk media here versus Retail ! These are the disc that normally made to be used to duplicate Video's or for Data use and have a label surface that is designed to me thermally printed or printed by inkjet printers set up to do that ! that is how they are different from the branded/retail dvd's you buy in the stores also the packaging will be very bussineslike versus colorful and decorative compared with retail . It all sounds slightly confusing but if you visit supermediastore.com Meritline.com or Rima.com and look at their dvd media offering you'll understand what i'm saying better . Another rule of sorts is Which Type/formats of DVD medi to use ? WEll that depends ? IF your DVD Burner permits you to Booktype DVD+R media Then go with DVD+R if your booktyping { Booktyping is basically a technical trick that Fools your DVD player , DVD-rom Drive or DVD burner into thinking That the DVD+R disc you just burned is a DVD-ROm { Like Commercially Made Movies and games , software ect...) DVD-Rom -Like DVD movies or Games that You rent or buy is the most Compatable Format/type of Media followed by DVD+R or DVD+R DL media booktyped to DVD-Rom , followed by DVD-R ! In the real world if your Players play whichever your burning without problems and anyone your loaning them to Like Family ect... Has no problems with tem then your set! Most modern DVD players will play either DVD+R or DVD-R equally well ! Especially The cheaper players for some reason ? It seams that some expensive dvd players sometimes will have issues where the cheaper drives don't go figure ? anyways hope That the other esteemed members and my lowly self have been some small help if even only in a small way ? Good luck and happy burning my friend patm1998

Quick suggestions, get good media now...

Not everybody has the time or the need to learn about media. If you're simply after the quick advice on what discs will almost always work the best in any DVD player or DVD burner, then get one of these:
    1. Verbatim DVD-R or DVD+R, made in either India or Taiwan.
    2. Taiyo Yuden DVD-R or DVD+R, from an authorized dealer only.
    3. Sony DVD-R or DVD+R, made in Taiwan only.- this is from the link you posted ! - While it is pretty good advice they fell down in a few respects ! 1. Verbatims Made in Taiwan or India - yes they are making some Verbatims in India now ! and some Members report Good results with them ! but most Afterdawners Prefer the Made in Taiwan Verbatims for DVD . 2.Taiyo Yudens DVD-R or DVD+R buy from Authorized dealers only !!! -This is good advice !! Supermediastore , Meritline , Rima.com all are stand up !! Companies !!! you can probably buy Taiyo yudens from other companies too but other than Newegg.com can you trust them ? 3. Sony DVD+R or DVD-R made in Taiwan only they could have Added Sony Made in Japan ! Sony Made in Japan are Either Taiyo Yudens ( Really Good stuff ) or Sony's own Media code And both are Good ! If you Get the Sony/Taiyo Yudens then you've got the Best media available !Taiyo Yuden and if you get The sony Made in Japan by Sony ? ( Their media code ) These are atleast as good as the Made in taiwan Sony's Which is Pretty good IMHO !!!! and from my actual experience in use !!!! Generally If you Stick with a small selection of quality Brands Taiyo Yuden , Verbatim , Sony ={ Made in Taiwan or Japan )you should be fine ! - These are all Top quality Disc and companies !!! If you are a oking for a slightly less expensive Media - you might try Media made By Ritek/ Ricoh - Ritek both manufactures media for others ! They are what's called a OEM= {Original Equipment Manufacturer } And under their own Ritek/Ridata brand !!! I have used many Ritek Disc that were Branded as Maxells or OfficeDepot without incedent !!! I find that they are quality media though not quite in the same class as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden !!!- Good for Giveaways for the family ect.... Regrettably Officedepot seems to have quit selling their own line \Brand of DVD media Which Ritek/Ricoh made for them !! They (officedepot ) were the only store brand media I would buy because you knew what you were getting !!!! Ritek is still available though from online vendors & at Newegg .com under their own brand name ! as well as under several other Brands Like maxell ? just do a little research at afterdawn & on-line you'll find what you need to know !another Small note About Sony - Sony is also Making/ having made DVD media in Malaysia and The general conscensus is that this isn't the Good stuff so be aware of that !!! - Also you probably won't run intany r atleast not often but Maxell 's Dvd Media ( Made in Japan ) is really good stuff = It's actually made by Hitachi/Maxell- The parent company versus being made for them by another company !!!- These dvd's do turn up occasionally and tend to mostly be 8x speed /older stock in my experience anyways!- but worth buying if you can find them at a fair price !!! . well that about does it for me again hop I have'nt worn your eyes out with these post ! Good luck and happy burning !!!!!

    TY printable for Wii backups

I have bought close to 1000 discs in the last 12 months and have been very pleased.

I choose between Supermediastore & Meritline, whichever is cheaper on inkjet printable media at the time of ordering. Tayio Yuden usually although sometimes I'll get Verbatim. Every once in awhile I'll get the 16x Ritek as it burns farly well for me but not as good as Verbs or TY.

Hmmmm, I use TDK media and they have been coding out (since mid January when I bought 400, and this past friday I bought 200 more) as Ritek F1, and that list still shows them as CMC.

They change suppliers from time to time like Maxell & the rest do. Ritek F1 is farly good media in my experience. I get better scan results with Tayio Yuden & Verbatim though.

bratcher- True but Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim have to get something for their money don't they ? or should I have said our money ? Yeah I hear what your saying though ! I've heard people swear By Ritek and some swear at Ritek since I've been DVD'ing but I've always had good experiences with them myself !!! Granted my experience has been more with the 8x speed I've burned a Awful lot of them puppies !!! But I have used the 16x 'ers to a lesser extent and found them good disc too though like you ,me and countless others have said They're not taiyo Yuden or verbatims quality -wise !!! but Good Media none the less !!! - They better be Cause I bought a Dumpster-load of Officedepot (Ritek/Ricoh's) everytime or every other time the went on sale !!! so Though I'm sad they ain't gonna have their store branded Riteks I guess I'll just have to Order online oR buy TDK's if they are still Ritek OeM'ed ? That's the one thing I liked with the Officedepots though You did'nt have to think too hard when you bought them ! You knew what you were getting Either Ritek or Ricoh's - Not like some of the Name Brands that seem to change suppliers from Batch to Batch and sometimes even from spindle to spindle though that might be a slight exageration? but you get my drift anyways That's how the Dvd Burns I guess Cheers Buddy we Gone !!!!!!!

TDK has changed their packaging when I bought my first batch of the year in mid january. They used to have a "locking type" containers and were coding as CMC's. Now, they have a "screw on top" and code out as Ritek F1.

I have bought mainly TDK's over the past years I have been burning and have had great success with them, being successful over 94% of the time.

Lately, I have been buying RiData disks from newegg. At $17.99-$19.99 for 100ct spindle AND free shipping, is a price that's hard to beat. I have averaged out to 2-5 failures per 100 disks; several times going thru a few hundred before getting a bad disk.

The few Ritek F1 failures I've had were really bad scan results near the end of the disc but then I've burned hundreds that were fine.

ZoSoIV- Well that's showing them isn't it ? Vote with your Checkbook, credit ,debit card , or whichever format you transact in ? Don't Blame you !!! I'd even drop'em a Polite but firm Email to tell 'em why they lost your bussiness ! Perhaps it will get their attention ,perhaps not But the Squeaky wheel get's the grease as the saying goes so Let one Fly in a Rhetorical sense I mean !!! I buy more Accessories & ink from both Than media Unless It's a real Dry spell for Brands like Sony & Verbatim at the Brick and mortar Stores sales wise !!! - If the Sale @ supermediastore or Meritline are signifigantly cheaper & have free Shipping it's worth it ! Or if I want a Specific Brand/type/speed of media that's mostly online only like Taiyo yuden own as opposed to MIJ Sony's ect .. That I might Find on sale somewhere ? though possible that is about as unlikely as finding a four leaf clover while getting struck by lightning while bronco riding a great white shark !!! That's a bit extreme and exagerated I know but that's illustrating- possibliy vs. probability- It might be possible but reality would dictate it's not highly probable !!! Probably so anyhow Good luck & happy burning !!!!

I've always compared Meritline to Supermediastore on media & bought whichever was cheaper at the time. But free shipping is good though.
