I have alott of movies that I get from my newsgroup Agent. Sometimes when I go to split a movie, the scene is darker than I would like. Is there a free program that brightens or lightnes a movie scene I thought that I saw a AVI MPG slpiter that also did what I want of course it was not free.
VirtualDub works with AVI files (it can load mpeg files if a special plugin is used, but it saves the output in AVI format)and contains filters that can be used to adjust contrast/brightness. The problem is that the video has to be re-compressed after the adjustment and depending on the original quality of the video, this may be unacceptable. To recompress the video, the correct codecs must be installed in the PC. The XviD codec is free and available for download. The DivX codec is available in both a free and 'Pro' version (this one has a 30 day trial). Typically, you would install the codecs (they can be uninstalled), run VirtualDub then open or drag the video onto the window. Click 'Audio' and select 'Direct Stream Copy' (this ensures that the original audio is saved with the video. Click 'Video' 'Full Processing Mode' 'Filters' 'Add' and select 'Brightness/Contrast' 'OK'. Adjust as required. Click 'Video' 'Compression' and select the same codec that was used to create the original video. If you installed the DivX Pro filter, 'configure', choose 'Home Theatre' 'Default settings'. Click 'File' 'Save as AVI' and save the new file.
Avidemux has same filters incorporated and accepts mpeg and other formats as input and output. To split video files, SolveigMM AVI Trimmer I find it to be one of the best. It does it very fast and without re-encoding-no quality loss. It has a free basic version: http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&id=AVITrimmer
