Hi. I own a Toshiba Satellite M35. It comes with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-820S writer. My software of choice is Nero Burning ROM 6.6.18. I used to have absolutely no problem with burning on pretty much any brand of media. However, lately, I've repeatedly gotten errors on brands I used to have no problem with. Sometimes, the drive cannot read DVDs that I've burned with it. It says there's an unspecified I/O device error. This is irritating enough, but since I have another computer with a DVD-ROM drive and I can get the data from there, I can live with that. However, the last 7 DVDs I've tried to burn have all failed to be completed. I get the range of errors from "illegal disc error" to "unspecified target error" to "could not perform end of disc-at-once" to "power calibration error". I do use the drive a lot, and have burned hundreds and hundreds of DVDs and CDs on it. Is it just dying due to overuse? Do I have no recourse but to purchase an external burner for my laptop? I've read a few threads and have seen suggestions about firmware upgrades, but according to other sites, Matshita hasn't provided any. I'd appreciate any input from someone more knowledgeable than I. You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero so I would recommend uninstalling it by running this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml Apart from that your log looks pretty clean however I cannot access my firmware page to check if your's is current. Depends on the age of your burner whether it will accept some of the Newer discs available.
After having surfed more around the web, I don't think mine is the newest firmware. It's 1.00 and I think there's a newer one here? http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2127 However, I am new to all of this and tried to run the upgrade simply by unzipping the downloaded 1003_PN.zip and double-clicking the exe file. When I did, I got the following error: "Wrong Firmware Data file is selected." If someone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction on how to upgrade my firmware, I'd be happy to try that. I did zap Roxio. Thanks for the link to the software!
