    No, you don't need to use the microphone.

    Some mini-game requires microphone but can be setup to
    use the controller instead.
    My mic is broken. That's why I know.

    no mycrophone needed....anyways i think that the games is better without it. Because sometime you will say left and they the caracter will go up or down or right.
